7480 with WD15, monitors disconnecting intermittently

We have a Dell Latitude 7480 attached to WD15 docking station over USB-C. Outputting to two monitors (DELL P2211H @ 1920x1080,60hz (miniDp to DVI) and DELL E2009W @ 1680 x 1050, 60hz (VGA))

At random intervals one of (or sometimes both) monitors will turn off as if no signal is being received, it’s off for a second or so then flashes back on). This is predominantly the DELL P2211H that disconnects. If it happens once it will usually happen a few more times before things settle.

I have tried a variety of other cabling configurations.

This is also happening with our only other Dell Latitude 7480 connected to a WD15 docking station - although outputting to two DELL P2211H monitors at 1920x1080 in this instance.

There's a firmware update for the WD15 that has some fixes for the DisplayPort MST hub that's responsible for handing video output that you may want to try.  It's available on support.dell.com if you choose your product -- select Accessories > Docks > WD15.  And of course if you haven't already, update your system's video drivers and BIOS, preferably before you run the dock firmware update.

Note that there seems to be a bug on the support.dell.com site for that page.  It defaults to Windows 7 32-bit, which does NOT list the firmware update, but if you select any other OS, the update will appear -- and then the Windows 7 32-bit OS selection will completely vanish. Not sure what's going on there.

Thanks, yes had seen the firmware update, no luck with that. All drivers, bios etc are up to date.

Any chance this is happening when using Citrix apps through Citrix Receiver?  If so, I just found this thread that suggests configuring Citrix to dedicate more memory to graphics: discussions.citrix.com/.../

No, this is just straight up Windows 10, couple of tabs open in IE, maybe a few office apps..

Hi brownium,

Thanks for posting.

If you are still having difficulties with your WD15, please contact Dell Tech Support, as I believe they have a fix for this issue.

Thanks, I have raised with Tech Support. I'll update here if I receive a solution.

I, too, encountered display issues with the WD15 and a 7480 [non-TB].  Getting the second display (being mini-DP > VGA) to come up was a constant battle.  Once the signal was finally acquired, you'd be fine for the rest of the day...only to have to start all over again the next time you booted up.

Driver & FW updates didn't resolve it.  Nor did replacing the [new] mini-DP > VGA cable.  Only after I swapped WD15's did the problem clear up.

Any luck with the Tech Support route? I am having the same issues on a 5480 with the WD15 dock. I've tried a second dock (same model) as well.

Did you already get any answer for your problem? It poped up at our company too. Until now we have 3 users with a Latitude 7480 and a WD15 dock getting the displays turned off. Just for a second or two and without any pattern of time or processes done on the client.

Many thanks for an update.

No, we had a replacement sent which didn't seem to help. As you say, it pops off for a second or two then returns and can happen a number of times in a row.

For us it seems to happen first thing, or later in the day (nothing scheduled on the laptops to run at these times), so I did wonder if they are prone to some kind of interference from other devices..
