ATI 6630m Switchable Graphics not working after Windows 8.1 update
Hello all,
Is anyone having a similar issue? Any possible solutions.
I have a Vostro 3550 and I was using Windows 8 without any problems, gaming was smooth and my Switchable Graphics worked without any issues.
After Windows 8.1 upgrade, the option to switch graphics vanished from my Catalyst menu, so only the Intel HD 3000 VGA was being used. I tried downloading the latest Windows 8 driver from my laptop's support page, but somehow it installs as a different model (7600m), so my games crash when I try to run.
Any suggestion will be very welcome.
Thanks in advance,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,
Updating BIOS and graphics driver should resolve the issue. Since this system model is not tested with 8.1 Operating System, the required drivers are not available for the same. However you may try installing the Windows 7/8 drivers in compatibility mode.
Please update BIOS and then update Intel and ATI drivers in compatibility mode. Update Intel driver first and then ATI driver. Restart the system after each update. Please find the instruction below for the same:
Download the driver from the link below and double click on the file and extract it on the desktop in a folder. Look for setup file in the extracted folder. Right click ‘.exe’ file and click ‘Properties’. Click “install in compatibility mode’. Click on Application and select ‘Troubleshoot Compatibility’. Next, click on ‘Troubleshoot Program’. Click on Program worked in earlier versions of Windows. Click on ‘Windows 8’.Click on ‘Start the Program’. Do not hit ‘Next’ until the installation completes. Once the installation completes, click on ‘Next’.
Click on the link below, enter the system service tag and click Submit. Select the Operating system from the drop down list to get drivers for your system model:

For AMD ATI Mobility Radeon graphics, try this Windows 7 driver given in the link below:

Please let me know if this helps.

Daniel,
Please continue with DELL-Sujatha K

When I was trying out Windows 8.1 preview, since the drivers were not signed, I had problems with the touch screen. I found out that changing the BIOS from Secure boot to Legacy boot, the touch screen would work.
May be an option to try and see if this works.

Hi Sujatha,
Thanks for the info, I'm at work now, I will definitely try this when I get home.
I already have the most recent BIOS version updated, but I didn't try installing the drivers in compatibility mode, hopefully it works.
Do you know when the model will be tested? I bought it in 2011 and runs perfectly well on Windows 8.1, it doesn't make sense to not support it.
Thanks and regards,
Daniel

DELL-SUJATHA K,
This does not work. The installation just hangs half way through.
I doubt that even if the installation worked, it would integrate successfully with 8.1
When it a driver update due to be released? It's a real shame and poor service that these drivers weren't ready for when 8.1 came out

I didn't do that, but I've got it working.
I installed the Intel HD drivers (http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/DriverDetails/Product/vostro-3550?driverId=5PFY2&osCode=W864&fileId=3100845564&languageCode=EN&categoryId=VI) (in win8 compatibility mode - although that probably doesn't matter), restarted the machine and then re-installed the Windows 8 Catalyst drivers from http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/DriverDetails/Product/vostro-3550?driverId=HJNJ1&osCode=W864&fileId=3081918467&languageCode=EN&categoryId=VI - not in compatibility mode, as it hung
Seems fine now

I think I'll try leshcatlabs as well, because installing the Intel HD drivers in compatibility mode has caused all sorts of issues.
Dell - when will the updated drivers be released?

I'm back, I tried everything with compatibility mode, but it didn't work, my BIOS is updated.
Then I tried installing the leshcatlabs drivers, it didn't work at first, but after cleaning up all Intel and ATI drivers, it worked in the end. Thanks for the tip.
Unfortunately it's not an official driver, so I hope Dell releases an official driver very soon.

Same problem here, I have a Vostro 3550 and the switchable graphics stopped working after Windows 8.1. I've tried the steps suggested by Sujatha, with no success.
It worked normally in Win 8.0, but after 8.1 update the Catalyst Control Center no longer offers the option to switch to the Radeon HD 6630M video board and gaming performance dropped. In an attempt to make it worked, I executed the following steps:
I tried reinstalling the AMD video driver, as Sujatha suggested, but the installation didn't finished due to errors.
I used a tool from AMD to clean the CCC and video drivers installation.
I reinstalled the Intel video driver.
I tried installing the AMD video driver again, and this time it succeded. The option to configure the Switchable Graphics appeared in the context menu in the desktop. However, when I clicked it, the CCC does not start. Also I'm not able to configure the PC to use the AMD video board through Power Plan (in fact, I'm no longer able to configure Power Plans at all).
I went to Device Manager, selected the Intel video driver, attempted to update the driver. It updated, I restarted the computer. And now I'm back to the original problem: no CCC option in the context menu, and I can't switch to the AMD video board. In addition, CCC does not open anymore (even when I try to start it from the shortcut in the Start Menu) and the Device Manager lists the AMD driver as a Radeon HD 7650M insted of 6630M.
I think I'm gonna try the Leshcat's driver next.

After some attempts , I managed to install the Leshcat's driver. With it I was able to switch graphics cards again. However, the driver presents some bugs:
- It does not recognize the notebook's monitor as the principal (I have two) when AMD card is active
- Video cardio crashs become more frequently when AMD Card is active
- I got blue screen twice accusing video problems after the installation
- Some time, when I lock the computer, lots of glitchs occur when I try to unlock the computer, even forcing me to restart the notebook sometimes
For some time, I was able to select the active video card using Catalyst and I could play my games fine. However, I can no longer do that. Due to some glitches, I selected the Intel as active video card some days ago and now catalyst does not give me options to change the video card anymore. I think I will have to reinstall Leshcat's driver.

Hi
can we install the BETA drivers from www.ati.com for windows 8.1 i think that should fix the switchable graphics issue and after installing the driver please change the performance mode in the catalyst center to high.
