After plugging my Laptop into my tv, things aren't the same!

After plugging my Dell Studio XPS 16 into my Samsung HD tv, nothing has been working the same. All of my games are in different, unsupported resolutions. Some of the games wont even work, and the others that usually start in full-screen mode start in a forced window mode. Some windows that I start (such as stuff from the control panel) are fuzzy looking. I've been told the press Fn+F8, but that doesn't do anything. Under my Display Settings > Advanced Settings, my monitor is listed as "Generic PnP Monitor" I'm not sure if it was always that. If anyone could help me fix my laptop or tell me if there is any other information I need to share I would greatly appreciate that! Thanks in advanced.

First make sure the resolution in Display Settings is set to the native resolution of your screen. This type problem can occur when outputting to an external monitor, especially if you change resolution settings to optimize the external monitor.
