Beep from the HD area on M1530

Hey,

I've got an m1530 with what I think is a HD that beeps from time to time.   It makes a beep, then clicks, then goes on its merry way?

Questions you may ask:

Q Is the sound coming out of the speakers?
A I dont think so, you even get it when you have headphones plugged in.

Q Whats it sound like?
A It sounds like a pretty hight note, maybe an E sharp, and it lasts about 1 second.

Q Any other issues?
A None that I can spot, HD seems to spin the rest of the time.

Beep, then click, then everything is cool. This is during operation. I have it on my desk at work, next to my corporate D610, for my music and such. So now, the last time it did it, it was up and running for about 4.5 hours.

Love the latin quote, maybe you are the man to solve this!

Beep, then click... does the system freeze? Is this only at boot or during operation?

Does anyone know the maker of the HD?  Maybe I could turn to them to see if they have an idea.

I contacted Toshiba, thinking that this is a Toshiba Drive. As a result of the below, I opened a ticket for service.

Hello,

The Hard Drive may be Defective. Contact the Toshiba Rma Dept. at
510-651-6077 ext.1 for warranty service.

Toshiba Technical Support.

Question: I am receiving an intermittent beep from this HD running in a
laptop with windows vista. I am certain that this noise is from the HD.
Is this a warning noise; or what does it indicate?

I have this random beep on my M1330 also. Doesn't seem to change any performance or anything.
I have no idea what it is though, sorry.

Sounds like a few people on notebookreview are saying the same thing.

Ah, you mean you opened a Dell ticket for service...

Shouldn't that be a Dell issue, since the hardware warranty covers HD's.

Changing the HD is the last thing I want to do, it'd take ages to get everything set up again.
Is the Beep a known problem that turns into drive failure?
Since it's not actually broken, would dell still replace it?

Exactly, sorry for the lack of clarity.

So what are they going to do? Would you get a new hard disk? Presumably they'll take away the old one, rather than copy the data off it (unless you have the 'keep your HD' option I guess).

Do you know if it'll come with Vista and the recovery partition for that machine or would you need to reinstall it all yourself?

Hey, If you don't mind - can you message back what they say. Every time it's beeped since reading this I've become a little more concerned about it!

I've got the same exact problem. Have you got any news on how to solve this? Is replacing the HDD the only option?

Well, basically they had me run an HD scan.  It showed no errors, I need to get back to them on it to see what they say.  Still a beepin'

They had me do the same with the same results (no errors). Now they asked me to set Quiet Mode into the BIOS's HDD acoustic mode. Hope it works. I'll try when I get back home.
