Black screen after Dell Inspiron 7720 BIOS update to A16

HI,

As in subject: after updating BIOS on Inspiron 7720 to the latest version (http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/uk/en/ukbsdt1/DriverDetails/Product/inspiron-17r-se-7720?driverI...) I get instant black screen. Everything was done as it should, no programs running, everything closed, exe file was ran as admin. The previous version was A15. The only control which is on is power. The system it was ran from is Windows 8.1x64 (Dell OEM upgraded from Windows 8 to 8.1 via Windows Store).

Does anyone has any idea how to solve this problem.

Thx in advance.

Same...  I am dead in the water other than boot menu.  When running diagnostics, everything passes.  A little help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, it was bought in March 2013. To be honest, I do not have it anymore. First, the disc went down after 6 months and I had problems with keyboard from the very beginning, then no ability to activate their OEM Win8 after they changed disc and keyboard. After problems with their official BIOS update and two changes of motherboard, they agreed to give money back. I've been talking wth some people (friends, family etc.) having Dell notebooks - none of them is happy with the hardware they bought and they all have problems with it - I did not believe it before I bought it because my previous Dell (bought in 2009 worked pretty good and I was happy with that) - now I had opportunity to feel their 'Dell pains'. Dell is really getting worse and worse - notebooks they provide under the brand which once was very good are not even half as reliable as they claim.

After having those problems I bought cheap Lenovo for literally half of the price with weaker parameters and it works flawlessly. Don't waste your nerves, time and money for Dell products.

Please excuse my English - it's not my native language.

It is APPARENT that these R17 7720 computers have a glitch.....  I also ran into this problem. I am an Electronic Engineer and have been in the computer industry since before 8087 processors.

Dell has not OWNED UP TO THIS...   This non-response attitude of telling customers to send private message instead of just stating a recall or offering a FIX has diminished my respect for Dell... I will no longer be selling or offering these computers as a good buy.  Not because they are any worst than any other companies computer... BUT BECAUSE DELL SEEMS NOT TO BE TRUSTED TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY for failed products.

Can not find solution to this wide spread problem. This is not a Windows Problem.. It is Hardware!

Exactly! Dell doesnt give a heck about helping or solving problem. And as you said, those messages with threats of banning from 'community' etc. if you do what? Tell the truth that their hardware is failing without ability to fix it and they do not care about cumstomers and warn people about Dell's irresponsibility. You know, it's kinda embarrassing what they do. As I wrote before - I've lost months (literally three at least) for the same cycle: hardware failure - reinstall - configure system and software - repeat. And as I wrote before I bought Lenovo for half of the price I gave for Dell Inspiron - it has weaker hardware configuration but it runs as hell.

Same as morganfj I'm no computer newbie - I'm webdeveloper for ten years and if there's a software issue I dare to say I can fix it, but here we deal with hardware issues and lack of interest on Dell's side to solve it. For me Dell is dead.

@Admins etc.: don't bother me with messages about inappropriate content - I can see none, feel free to ban account and delete posts if you please ;]

The 7720 SE was a huge <ADMIN NOTE: Substitute character removed as per TOU> -up, riddled with duff hardware and compatibility issues. Dell really are a cunch of bunts for not admitting these machines <ADMIN NOTE: Profanity removed as per TOU> large time. I will never buy Dell ever again, for myself or any of my customers.

... If only Carlsberg made laptops

So what is up with the A16 BIOS update? I too have the 7720 and have tried to update to the A17, but my BIOS is now running up against an error and can not be recognized.  Not only does the new A17 not recognize my BIOS but the 15 & 16 versions do not either. Apparently this is an issue that is not being addressed by DELL since I see no adequate response here. When an update bricks someone's machine they should politely acknowledge it. I guess I am lucky that, for now, my BIOS is only inaccessible by the update.

Another issue is it goes straight to update and does not allow one to back up the old BIOS if there is a failure. Hope the folks here were able to get tech help from outside DELL to restore their machines to A15. However, DELL should have offered to make this right.

Could this simply be a dead CMOS battery and DELL's setup won't allow the machine to boot?

DELL is becoming like Gateway, once powerful, and soon dead, because of their manipulative hold on systems. Good Luck!
