Black square on pointer?? Inspiron 1545

I'm not sure if this is in the right place, but for a long while now, there has been a black square that appears over the pointer pretty often on my Inspiron 1545.  I believe it's a problem with a driver or graphics controller or whatnot...but it's a little confusing on the Dell 'Drivers and Downloads' page, even after I enter the service tag.  I don't know which one is the right one to fix this graphics issue.

Another slightly unrelated question: on the 'Drivers and Downloads' page, if it says "recommended", does that mean that I should go ahead and download it, even if the update is before the date of purchase?  For instance, I purchased this laptop in 09/09.  If there's an update from, say, 05/09, then should I still download it?  Thanks in advance to anyone who responds with any sort of help...
