Could it be while your'e on IE and clicking on links that you hear these sounds?  Check your sound options in Control Panel and preview the Complete Navigation wav file, this file makes a clicking sound when you click on a link in IE.  Unchecking this file will make the sound go away.

I have the same problem.  I have a 5150 and received it with a 4200 RPM drive.  I called Dell and told them that I was supposed to get a 7200 RPM drive.  They sent me a Hitachi 7200 and it's much faster, but I hear a click every few seconds for short periods of time, like a read or write click, but louder.  It's more irritating than anything, but I would really hate for my drive to go out.

My problem seemed to go away.  I don't hear any clicking any more.
