Can Dell Re-Install DVD fix Vista media player???

I have a Dell Vostro laptop 1700 running Vista 32bit... lately I have had trouble with the media player (I think it is #11) and it came in Vista according to what I have read. My first attempt to fix it was to do a restore but that has caused it not to open at all.  *  So my next attempt and question is = can one of these re-install disks fix the player without wiping everything gone (all my files, etc.). Does anyone know about this for certain???  Thanks in advance.
