Can i have SSD along with hard disk in New Dell Inspiron 15 series 7000

Hi,

I am planning to buy New Dell Inspiron 15 series 7000. I would want to replace the harddisk with SSD by next year or so. But i wanted to know if i can have SSD along with hard disk in this laptop.

I wanted both good performance along with large storage. So i was wondering if i can have two disks at once.

Thanks in advance

mSATA and mini-PCI express have the same form factor but are electrically different.   It doesn't look like any of the newer Inspiron 7000 series models have mSATA connectors -- the older 3rd generation ones did, though.

If you want an SSD along with a hard drive, you'll need to consider  an XPS system - not an Inspiron.

Sorry , I'm a bit late, but this will help in future searches. I have the Inspiron 7737 , which only has 1 HD slot, so if you're willing to sacrifice your DVD Drive , you can buy a HD Caddy which replaces your DVD drive with a second HD / SSD , got mine for $15

Okay. And mSATA drive would be my SSD that i will attach. In case i have mini-PCI card i wont have to touch my existing hard disk on the system. Is it so? and which one would be the primary disk out of the two?

By the way this is the system i would be buying. I doubt if that comes with mini-PCI card.

You can't install two standard 2.5" drives, no.  You can on some models, install an mSATA drive (mini-PCI card).  if you want that option you must purchase the system that way - if you don't order the mSATA drive, the system will be built without the mSATA connector.

Thanks for the response.

It would be great if you could suggest me a way to integerate a SSD cache if not SSD disk to this laptop.

Since there is no space for an mSATA SSD, you'd need to buy a standard 2.5" hard drive with a built-in SSD (so-called hybrid drive).  Seagate and Western Digital both have several models of these (they're called SSHDs by both manufacturers).

If that is the case then why do they sell the high end Inspiron 15 7000 with a 256GB Msata drive?  If it has a msata to start with then couldn't you add a sata drive in the 2.5" slot due to the msata drive using the msata slot?

I was going to suggest the same thing :emotion-1:

And as a bonus, you can purchase a simple external enclosure or a SATA to USB adapter/bridge with a power cable, and you'll have an external DVD drive to use if needed

Install this dual drive:

http://www.amazon.com/Black2-Dual-Drive-2-5-WD1001X06XDTL/dp/B00GSJ9X4Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1422393100&sr=8-1&keywords=wd+dual+drive

It has both 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD in one unit.

I don't know what wil be the thicknes of your HDD in your laptop though this is 9.5mm thick.

Hope I helped you

This solution sounds great.  Does anyone know for sure whether I'll be able to replace the 500gb HDD in my Insprion 13 7000 2in1 arriving shortly?  I'd like to go SSD if possible while retaining enough space to hold everything.

Hi,

i have just purchased an inspiron 15 7000, which is great. but, i took the advice of my brother and went for the ssd model, not realising that i required more storage than 256gb.

From what i understand, i have a couple of options, maybe.

1. i return to dell, as it is only 5 days old

2. i get a bigger ssd (don't actually know if that is possible)

3. i get a nas drive, and store music and photos and home videos on that.

regarding point 3, i have a sonos system, so a nas drive would work well here. the network is wireless, which runs off a new d-link viper 5ghz.

my concern is that the wireless network will not be anywhere near as fast as having bigger storage contained within the laptop.

what are your thoughts?

thanks.

I have one with the m2 ssd and while there is a separate space for another drive, there are no connections for one. Don't know if a ribbon cable is even available at this time. First Dell anything so, still learning about them.

Just got off of chat and there  is NO additional hardware to install second drive.
