Cannot extend desktop to external wide screen monitor on xps 1210
I have a GeForce Go 7400 that came with my Dell XPS 1210 notebook. I have just bought a widescreen 22 inch Dell monitor to use externally. I am having trouble configuring the external monitor to show up as an extension to my desktop with anything more than a 1024x768 (non widescreen) resolution.
If I show the same thing on my desktop and external monitor I can get a 1280x800 widescreen resolution on the external monitor but as soon as I try to extend my desktop to it, the best I can get is 1024x768.
I have used a data projector as an extension of my desktop and was able to have a resolution of 1600x1200 on it but not a widescreen resolution.
Is there a setting that I am missing that will let me send a relatively hi resolution widescreen picture as an extension of my desktop to my external monitor.
I have contacted Dell but they haven't been much help.

When cloning the laptop, the resolution of both displays will default to the lowest native resolution of the two. Thus you get 1280x800, the max resolution for the M1210, on both. When extending the desktop, if the external monitor has a lower native resolution, it will use that, while the laptop screen will use it's maximum resolution. Most Dell 22" wiidescreens have a maximum height of 1050 or 1080 dpi. Therefore you can not get 1600x1200. Your projector may have a larger max resolution, so it does 1600x1200. You can try to go to the Custom Resolution Tab in the Nvidia Control Panel and try to set the resolution you want, but I believe it will not allow a setting above the external's native resolution.

It gets real tricky with the external monitor as an extension of the desktop. I just got mine configures and I love it. I use an XPS M1730 with a resolution of 1920 x 1200 and I found myself constantantly having to resize everything on the external monitor, which had a lower resolution. Finally, I bought a new monitor with the same resolution as the laptop. Now its great, everything always fits. But the monitor has a 24" wide panel so everything is much bigger then on the laptop which has only a 17" widepanel screen.
