Cannot play 5.1 surround sound over HDMI

Hi,

my laptop is dell 15-7569. It has Intel Graphics 520 graphics card and realtek audio chip. I also have a Vizio 5.1 sound bar connecting to my dell laptop over HDMI cable.

laptop -> HDMI cable -> vizio sb4051-C0

I can play stereo sound over HDMI to the sound bar, but cannot play 5.1 surround sound.

In control pannel -> hardware and sound -> sound -> playback -> intel display audio -> configure, I can only see "stereo", but no "5.1" available.

I have installed the latest Intel Graphics 520 driver.

Can anyone help me play 5.1 sound over HDMI? Thanks.

Here is another screenshot showing my speaker only support 2 channels.

But I tested my speaker using its own "speaker test" function, I can hear all 5 speakers and the subwoofer working well.

Hi,

Thanks for posting.

To test the driver, switch between the Realtek audio driver and the Windows native audio driver.

1. Open the Device Manager (find it in the Control Panel, or type devmgmt.msc into the search box).
2. Expand the "Sound, video & game controllers" and right click on "Realtek High Definition Audio".
3. Select to "Update Driver Software".
4. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software".
5. Click "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer".
6. Put a check in the box "Show compatible hardware" if not already checked.
7. In the list of devices, click "High Definition Audio" (the native driver).
8. Click "Next".
9. On the Update Driver Warning box, click "Yes" (install the driver).
10. Restart the laptop if prompted. If not prompted, sometimes you have to restart, sometimes not.
[To get back to the Realtek driver, do it again but reverse the names in steps 2 and 7.]

If you only have the symptoms with one of the drivers, then the other is at fault. If you have the same symptoms with both audio drivers, then it is very probably not a driver issue.

Sorry, I did not see you added the speaker configuration.

Do you have another type of Audio panel available.  I don't remember using the Intel Display audio so I have no experience what might be available.  Maybe there is another driver for the Intel Display audio, maybe on the Intel site.  I will try to check to see if I can find anything.

Hi Saltgrass,

I tried lasted Intel graphics driver from intel website, still not working. My laptop only has a combo jack for audio, which does not support 5.1 audio. An alternative way is to use an external USB sound card that can output 5.1 audio. But I still want to just HDMI directly output from my laptop.

Hi Robert,

Thanks for reply.

I am connecting HDMI port from my laptop to my sound bar. I think this is related to the graphic card driver, which in my case is Intel Grahics 520's driver, because HDMI are controlled by graphic card, not the audio card. Therefore I don't think my problem is related to Realtek or native audio driver.

I'm looking at the specifications for your laptop, and I don't see a mention of 5.1 audio.  The specs show: Realtek ALC3253 with Waves MaxxAudio and One HDMI 1.4a/b port (4K support) Which means it's a video port, not audio.  You will need to purchase a separate soundcard device like the other poster suggested in order to utilize the 5.1.
