Connecting monitor to my laptop--Pleae help!

Hi, I have a Dell N5040, and was wondering how, if it is even possible, to hook up a monitor to my laptop.  I have tried 3 different monitors, and none will work.  The monitor will receive the signal, but when I boot up the laptop it isn't recognized.  I don't know if I'm doing something wrong, I've tried installing drivers but nothing will work.  I noticed the display connection (vga) doesn't have the ability to screw down, does that matter?  Please help me.  Thank you!

> after connecting a monitor to your laptop via VGA port you have to press either "F1" or  "F1" & "FN" to switch between internal, external, extend etc options.

> during boot up you have to press "F1" & "FN" to see t BIOS or Boot menus

> VGA monitors can only work within a certain range of resolution and frequency but usually cope very well with normal laptop screen settings.Unless you use more than 10 year old monitors you should be fine....
