DELL Vostro 1310 - dark screen; visible only at one angle

Hello,

A few weeks ago, my Vostro 1310 screen would flicker (no colour change) at certain angles (e.g., when I would tilt it past 90 degrees). The problem quickly worsened and instead of just flickering, the entire screen would go dark at certain angles. Then, it was happening at start-up....you could make out (very, very faintly) the Windows login prompt and it would only become visible once you tilted the screen at a certain angle.

More recently....when I turn on the laptop, the entire screen is dark (but you can still tell that the Windows login is there very faintly) and it becomes visible only at about a 40-50 degree angle.  Today, I'm lucky to even get something on the screen at all.....it remains dark the entire time and if I'm super, super lucky, it may become visible if it's just at that perfect angle...as soon as it's tilted backward or forward even slightly, it goes dark. I should note again, you can make out the faint image of whatever was on the screen before it went dark. Also, when the screen is visible, everything looks perfect....there are no issues with colours, etc. In other words, it goes from "perfect" to completely dark.

My DELL is only a little over a year old and stupidly, I forgot to extend my warranty. I have brought it into a computer place near me and they think it's the connecter cable (i.e., under the hinge cover, on the left hand side --- they believe that it was "pinched" for a long time and now, it's likely severed). However, they are having a really hard time finding the cable for the 1310. Given the symptoms that I described, is it likely the LCD cable?? I can't believe it's acting up like this and it hasn't even been a year.

I have noticed other posts re: the Inspiron screen but there was no mention on those posts of flickering initially.

Thank you,

Kathy

More likely you have a failing backlight - contact and LCD repair specialist.  The cost to repair should run about $100.

Hi Kathy

Did you find out what the problem is? As I think my vostro has the same fault. Turns on ok but when you open the more than 45 degrees screen goes blank

Hope it doesn't need a new screen as they are pricey.

Last time I'll be buying a dell

Hi Kieran,

It was the video cable connector, which is not very expensive but very hard to find :( It took us five months to track one down.

Good luck!

Sounds like a cable issue - if it's the inverter it can be tested with a bit of equipment without opening the laptop screen.

Hi Kathy

Thanks for the feedback. Do you know where you cot the video connector cable in the end?

Thanks again

Kieran

Hi Kathy,

I have been unable to find the cable as well and would like to know where you found one. Or, what the part number is so I can search for alternatives.

Last contact with Dell tech support indicated We needed to purchase the LCD kit which included the cable for over $200.00. Unfortunately the kit has been discontinued. The alternate LCD kit does not include the cable - Go figure.

Fortunately I was able to repair the harness so our laptop is working for now.  Since the cable is in a very tight spot I don't know how long the repair will last.

Thank in advance,

Ken

Hi Ken,

Unfortunately, I have no idea what the part number is :( I took the laptop to a shop (Waterloo Networks) and it took them almost 6 months to get the cable!!! I don't know where they got it but it was pricey...over $200 for part & labour. They told me that Dell makes it extremely hard to buy parts outside of Dell and as you mentioned, there is also the issue of parts being discontinued. This is the place that fixed it: http://www.waterloonetworks.com/

Good luck! Mine is perfect now - it just took forever to fix.

Hey Guys,

I had the same issues with a customers laptop. You can order the cable and get it in about 2 days. The item number is: DC02000LK00 H525C.
