DELL precision m4800 freezes/hangs randomly for 5secs or so and recovers.

Hi ,

I had just bought a brand new dell precision m4800 laptop with the following specifications:

  • Smartcard Reader Base (Non FIPS) for HD/FHD/UHD Panel
  • 1 Intel Core i7-4810MQ Processor (Quad Core 2.80GHz, 3.80GHz Turbo, 6MB 47W, w/HD Graphics 4600)
  • Energy Star, M4800
  • 1 15.6 inch UltraSharp IGZO UHD (3840x2160) 100% Color Gamut LED-backlit with Premium Panel
  • 32GB (4x8GB) 1600MHz DDR3L
  • 1 256GB Solid State Drive Full Mini Card
  • 1 2nd 1TB 2.5 inch SATA (7200 Rpm) Hard Drive, OptiPlex
  • 1 No Extra Internal Hard Drives(Media Bay)
  • AMD FirePro M5100 w/2GB GDDR5
  • 1 Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 802.11ac/a/b/g/n 2x2 + Bluetooth 4.0 LE Half Mini Card
  • 1 Intel Wireless 7260 Driver
  • Internal English Backlit Dual Pointing Keyboard
  • 1 Windows(R) 8.1 Pro (64Bit) English
  • 9-cell (97Wh) Lithium Ion battery with ExpressCharge

Well the problem is that I keep running into random freezes/hangs for a short span of time while doing any process on this machine. This is severely interfering with my productivity and workflow.

Looking forward for all the support that I can get.

Hi Carrac1234,

Sorry to hear that troubleshooting had no effect. Have you already updated your systems BIOS and drivers to the latest available on the support site? If not I would suggest running the Dell Command Update utility to automatically install any relevant updates available for your system. You can download this software from the Dell Drivers & Downloads website.

Should the problem continue after this, make sure to run the systems pre OS hardware diagnostics, a possible hardware fault could cause issues like what you’re describing and these diagnostics should detect that and the support teams in your region should be able to assist in ordering replacement parts.

You could also test uninstalling the Intel Rapid Storage Driver and allowing windows to manage the storage controller to see if this prevents the lock ups.

Keep us posted!

Hi Carrac1234,

There is a great Wiki on the Microsoft community site that provides instructions on that. Link below.

Hi Carrac1234,

Sorry to hear that! As it sounds like your hardware is passing diagnostics I would focus troubleshooting on software. Testing in safe mode and reinstalling the operating system should also help confirm this. There’s a Microsoft Fixit that should automatically push the system to Windows management, found HERE. If you’ve not already though I would suggest making sure the systems Firmware and BIOS is up to date with the latest released on the support site, Hard drive firmware updates are available from many manufactures that could have an effect on this. Dell Command Update should have installed the latest Drivers on your system but I’d suggest testing with other revision of IRST from the support site as well, this would also help rule out compatibility issues specifically with the software installed on your system.

Have you also tested different power profiles or with the system on battery as well as connected to AC?

Hey  Carrac1234,

If everything above has no effect on the locking issue at all I would suggest reinstalling the operating system. Even with the system passing hardware diagnostics, as the problem is still occurring for you in safe mode, there’s a possibility this is hardware related. Components such as memory or the hard drive could be the point of failure if the problem continues with a clean windows installation.

I can check on service and technical support options in your region if you PM me your details.

Thanks,

There seems to be a problem when i am trying to send you the PM. I have successfully uninstalled the IRST software and drivers and refreshed my system a couple of time yet there seems to be no effect on the problem

We have several of M4800s with this configuration in the office. Several of us had the same issue described here. We decided it must be a graphics card issue after we noticed that the external monitors were still responsive when the laptop screen was frozen. The solution that eventually worked was to uninstall the Catalyst drivers. Best of luck.
