Dead Inspiron 1521 DEAD except for power light
Nothing happens, no beeps, no lights except solid green power light. Memory?? Motherboard??

Same thing happened to mine from abuse. I got it working again by removing battery and power and holding down start button for 15 seconds and removing DVD drive. I also found the pin that senses the open closed position was worn down so now I have to activate it with my finger.
Put it all back togeather again but leave the drive out then try the start button. If you get a start It will show F1 and F12 (on my laptop) and F5 will allow me to go into safe mode. If your hard drive is foo baa. Try putting in the DVD drive and your Windows disk. Then try change the boot order to try booting from your dvd drive first. Trial and error.

Thanks, I'll try and let you know. I still think it's the motherboard though.
