Dell 1720 screen getting dimmer (not much but enough to be an issue). Will replacing screen solve problem?

Hi,

My Inspiron 1720's 1920x1200 TrueLife display (CCFL) is getting a bit dull now. I just wanted to confirm that ordering a new screen is all I need to do to give it some added brightness. I'd estimate that it's about 15-20% less bright than when I bought it. Thanks!

CCFL bulbs do deteriorate with time - if you choose to replace the screen, be sure you replace the inverter as well.

Hi,

I will recommend you to check the brightness in BIOS (system setup):

  • Restart your system and keep tapping 'F2' as soon as the Dell logo appears.
  • The system will enter the BIOS.

If the screen is not dull in BIOS, this may be an issue with a video driver. Uninstalling and re installing the video driver may fix this issue:

  • Click on "Start" and right click on "Computer".
  • Click on ‘Manage" and click on "Device Manager".
  • Expand "Display adapters" and right click on the video driver depending on the video card your system has.
  • Click on "uninstall".
  • Check the box to delete the driver's software.
  • Restart your system once the driver is uninstalled.
  • Click on the below link:

  • Select the operating system.
  • Go to 'Video' and click on the video driver depending on the video card your system has.
  • Click on 'Download File' and select 'Single File Download'.
  • Click on 'Continue'.
  • Save the driver on the desktop.
  • Once the driver is saved on the desktop, right click on it from the desktop and click on 'Run as administrator'.
  • Install the video driver by following the on screen instructions.
  • Restart your system and check if the issue is fixed.

If the issue still persists, you can also update the system BIOS:

Note: Please save any unsaved data as your system will restart automatically after updating the BIOS. Disconnect all the external peripherals like printer, camera, scanner, external hard drive, flash drive etc. Also, the battery should be charged 10% or above.

  • Click on 'Download Now'.
  • Select 'Single-file Download' and click on 'Continue'.
  • Click on 'Run' and follow the on screen instructions.

I have added you as a friend. Please accept my friend request by clicking on my name highlighted in blue and then click on “Friends” tab at the top and then click on “Request to Review” and finally click on “Accept” button.

I am sending you a private message as well. Click on “Inbox” to respond to the message and provide system’s Service Tag and contact details so I may access your system records and check for further course of action. You could also click on Start Conversation to send a private message.

Keep me posted. Please reply for any further questions.

Moreover, if this place doesn't have the inverter included, is there a site you would recommend that does or that you would recommend for another reason? I searched in vain for a screen replacement that would be LED backlit, but I guess such things can't be had for my ageing machine!
