Dell 5521 graphics swicing problem on windows 8.1

Hi,

After updating my pc to windows 8.1 my amd 8730 card was not working so I installed the drivers for both display adapters(intel hd 4000 and amd radeon hd 8730m) from here http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/in/en/19/Product/inspiron-15r-5521. But after installing both the drivers graphics switching is not working. Even after assigning high performance for my games(far cry 3, Max payne 3) from "configure switchable graphics" I am getting bad performane as only intel hd 4000 is working.......I have tried reinstalling the games.....plz help I m stuck...

Thanks

I am also having the exact same problem, i purchased this laptop for business use and to play some games, i selected the 15r-5521 due to it having the graphic card and like above i can not access it to play the games.

I have seen in other forum entries this has been a problem for a while and would like to believe that there is a solution that can resolve this soon, because at the moment it is not doing what it was advertised it can do.

Thank You

Just to add as well i can not create the recovery media for this unit or access any of the dell utilities or services, i would very much like to see a fix to this very soon.

I am also having this exact problem on my 15R-5521! The laptop claims to be using the high performance (dedicated) card, but it no longer performs any better than the power saving (integrated) card.

I spoke to Dell the other day in regards to the switching problem as well as not being able to burn off recovery discs or use Dell's software or drivers updates. The Tech asked me if i could download the update for the graphic card driver (AMD Radeon HD 8730M Graphics Driver at http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails/Product/inspiron-15r-5521?driverId=VHY54&osCode=W864&fileId=3126513687&languageCode=en&categoryId=VI) I explained that i have already done this twice and it resulted in getting a black flickering screen where on the on screen keyboard would occasionally flash and do nothing else, and that the only way to get the computer to load again was to go to a previous back up/ restore point, she asked me to run the diagnostics from the F12 boot menu at start up.

After running diagnostics it did not pick up any problems and i insisted that a set of recovery discs be sent to me and they were happy to do so (after being on hold for a while for her to check if she can). I will then have to restore the comp back to factory image and then i will try and update the graphics driver. From all else i have read on these forums there seems to be a problem with the win 8.1 update and the Dell drivers, so i guess i will be staying away from 8.1 until they can sort out the driver problem.

I will update the progress when the discs arrive and i have restored the laptop to factory to see if that solves the graphic card issue.

I had the same problem but  it is fixed now (Go to 5521 15R's drivers download page: http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/Product/inspiron-15r-5521/ & select Windows 8 64 Bit from Operating System menu instead of Windows 8.1 64 Bit)

OR download from below links directly:

For 7670M Radeon Graphics: http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails/Product/inspiron-15r-5521?driverId=6097M&osCode=W864&fileId=3159568692&languageCode=en&categoryId=VI

For 8730M Radeon Graphics: http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails/Product/inspiron-15r-5521?driverId=VHY54&osCode=W864&fileId=3126513687&languageCode=en&categoryId=VI

I bet your problem will be solved!

Thanks The Maximus - I did try that but ended up having the same issue almost at the end of it and then got a black flickering screen and nothing else, had to restore back to a previous point to get the unit to operate again.

Also when trying to update with windows update for the GPU got the same problem. Starting to believe that the laptop graphics card is faulty but still haven't received the recovery disc that were supposed to sent by Dell so kinda stuck and very unhappy.

Time to make another phone call and unless i get a better reason or response I will be looking to return the laptop to Dell for a refund. It can not do what it was advertising it could do.

Cheers for the idea
