Dell 7720 BIOS Question

http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails/DriverFileFormats/Product/inspiron-17r-se-7720?DriverId=48NHN&FileId=2998272941&urlProductCode=False

Is there a way to find out what this update does?  My system is running fine and would like to know if this is important enough to risk changing the system.

Hi  Diana C.,

Welcome to the Community,

Usually there is tab which says Fixes and Enhancements on that link which gives a brief description of the fixes applied on the new BIOS version.I would suggest you to wait for 2 to 3 days,to see if the fixes on that BIOS is updated.

I will also try to see if I can get more information on that  BIOS.

Thank You

Thanks much Roshan.  I will hold off updating until notes are released to see if I would need it.

Hi  Diana C.

There is new BIOS version A08 released on 9/10/2012.You can use this link below for download :

www.dell.com/.../inspiron-17r-se-7720

If you go under Other versions in that link, you will see the old version A03 listed there. If you choose to update BIOS,you can directly update the A08 version as Importance shows recommended.

Thank You

A11 change log sez: "Smooth Brightness support for Windows 8"

I've been reading the 7720 threads ( all 200 of em) and it seems that BIOS A11 causes more problems than it fixes!

Is there an A12 coming out soon?

One more question: if my machine (arriving in a few days) comes with A11, can I downgrade it to A08?

Going  From A08 to A11 caused the following for me:

I'm no longer able to get into the BIOS at al!!!l

Tried every which way to  Using the Power On F2  Key (Tapping, Holding, BANGING) or for that matter the F12 Boot Options menu won't work either.

The system will just boot into the Windows 8 Login screen.

Begetting that I went to A11 but I'm pretty sure you can't go back to A08 not unless you did a BIOS Backup before hand. Running the A08 Install will terminate because it see the newer BIOS :(

Anyone from Dell Wish to Chime in on this Thread or the many other threads that 17R SE 7720 Users have been posting about this issue??

Personally I'm very happy that my machine arrived (last week) with A10 bios installed, but this lack of support on BIOS and driver issues is not encouraging (in terms of me ever buying anything from DELL 'ever again'...). The biggest complaint all over these forums is that A11 is locking everyone out of the BIOS - so why didn't A12 address this issue???

BTW, did those of you with A11 or A12 BIOS ever try holding down "Esc" or "Del" keys during a boot? (Those used to be classical BIOS access keys ...)

Tried everything - only way into BIOS A11 or A12 now is to pull the HDD from the system.

Ironically DELL has now removed the A10 BIOS from the "Previous Version List" it jumps from A08 to A11 with A12 being the latest as of Jan 14th 2013.  Both A11 and A12 are locked out, no keystroke what so ever will get a user into the BIOS settings.  Also of Note all user manuals and tech manuals have been pulled from their site for the 7720 as well.  What gives?

I complained to DELL several weeks ago about the state of the 7720 manual downloads page (i.e. there is no actual USER MANUAL posted there, only a quickstart guide and an admittedly very useful hardware disassembly book). But at the time (pre-order) I was looking for details on the BIOS ( like most user manuals contain) - and for good reason as it turns out, as the BIOS interface on this machine is lacking some very common functions, the boot order is unintuitive - indeed it is almost incomprehensible. (And I've been working with BIOS since 8088 was a consumer CPU...)

Anyway, the user manual should soon be forthcoming, I VERY MUCH HOPE!

PS: I lucked out and my machine was delivered with BIOS A10... :emotion-35:
