Dell Inspiron 1420 Display driver issues

This is my first post (and with any luck my last). My Dell Inspiron 1420 laptop has display issues. While gaming or watching videos, the display will dim and re-bright as if it were being unplugged and plugged back in. Shortly after this begins, whichever program I am running (usually World of Warcraft) will become non-responsive. In other posts on WoW forums I have read that there is an issue with the laptop display driver and the newest patches online. An alternative driver possibility was listed, but I believe this alternate driver to be the problem, since the issue never arose before the update. However, without the driver, my games will not work. Are there any other possibilities or options than buying a new computer because of a driver issue that Dell refuses to update for their product? 

PS: The display device is: Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset family.
