Dell Inspiron 15 5000 (5558) SSD upgrade
Just received my Dell Inspiron 15 5000 (5558) yesterday and I'm thinking of upgrading the Hard Drive to an SSD and wonder what problems if any I would encounter?
Any Bios Settings to change?
The SSD will have a smaller capacity than the 1gb HDD it came with.
I would prefer to use the current Licenced version of Windows 8.1 that’s already installed on the Hard Drive that came with the laptop, I know there's cloning software out there but would prefer a clean install. I've made the Dell recovery media using a USB stick would this be all I need to reinstall Windows 8.1 on the SSD?
Thanks..

Hi,
If you have already created a recovery media onto a USB key, That should take care of the licensing issue with 8.1 as the product key is injected into the motherboard, not the hard drive.
Please disable "Secure boot" and ensure the USB boot is enabled in BIOS before booting from the USB key to reinstall Windows.
Thank you

You're limited to a 7 mm or slimmer drive - a 9.5 mm drive won't fit inside the system.

I also just received my Inspiron 15 (5558) and am considering changing out the HD for an SSD and have the following questions.
1. If I clone the Inspiron's HD disk image over to the SSD (using Acronis which I used to make a disk image to an external portable drive), what steps do I need to take to do this?
2. What form factor SSD and other constraints are required for compatibility with the Inspiron?

Thanks for your reply. Just to clarify the procedure, is this essentially the steps I need to take?
- Remove HD and replace with 2.5" Sata 3 SSD
- Connect external USB drive containing full disk image (ie both C & Recovery partitions)
- Insert DVD containing Acronis boot software into tray
- Boot into BIOS and disable secure boot while setting DVD drive as the boot drive
- Launch Acronis and clone disk image on USB drive to SSD
- Reboot and all is well?
Do I change any other BIOS settings or other configuration settings? Does secure boot remain disabled? Let me know if I missed anything.

Acronis can do the job -- you will need to make sure secure boot is turned off before imaging.
You need a 2.5" SSD -- not a card (neither mSATA nor m.2 cards are supported).

To boot from an optical disc, I suspect you'll also need to change the BIOS into legacy mode (UEFI doesn't support booting from a DVD).

I have Windows 10. Does the SSD update process described in the second email in the string work with Windos 10?

Just received a correspondence from Dell tech support the other day telling me the HD in the Inspiron 5000 series [5559] is a 9.5mm Sata drive. I also plan on replacing the HD in my Inspiron and plan on using the original as a second HD in the optical drive bay. I'm told by the after market providers of the optical drive caddy that it (optical drive bay) will accept a 9.5mm Sata HD. EJN, you're the Rock Star, who got the right numbers?

Is clean install from recovery pen drive always better than cloning the system? Will the cloned Windows10 remain stable with no issues in the long run?

I think you'll find that the optical bay will take a 9.5 mm drive (standard DVD drives are 12.5 mm in height) but that the internal drive will be 7 mm.
