Dell Inspiron 1721 CPU upgrade
Dear Dell Community,
I recently acquired a Dell Inspiron 1721 (MY334 system board rev D). As with most laptops I get I try to Upgrade everything I can to get the most out of them. Searching for a fast CPU upgrade I found a site advertising specific CPU upgrades for my 1721. An AMD Turion 64 X2 Ultra ZM-84 was recommended so I bought one and tried to install it. Problem is the laptop wont boot with it. I just get all the lights flashing.
Current BIOS is A05 and I have already downloaded A07 and having put the old TK-55 CPU back in I will update the BIOS to A07.
But I have gone back and forth with several tech sites and they all state that this motherboard is designed for both the Athalon 64 X2 and the Turion 64 X2 and so it should handle the Turion 64 X2 ultra without any problems.
Are they wrong? OR What am I missing or doing wrong?
Be advise I can handle any technical detail you throw at me. I am a retired HP (sorry Dell) notebook tech support agent 2x there top agent worldwide.
Thanks in advance

Were you able to get this resolved? I'm having the same issue. My original Turion CPU AMD TL-60 was running at 600 MHz instead of it's usual 2 GHz so I purchased a TL-64 (2.2 GHz). Unforunately, the 1721 won't boot. Holding down the power button for several seconds only results in the 3 LEDs next to the power button flashing.

Dear Martin,
Interestingly enough I solved my issue with a TL-64. I suggest you remove the TL-64 and closely inspect both it and the socket for bent or broken pins. Also you might test the motherboard with a known good TL-xx or TK-xx cpu to make sure it is not a motherboard problem. (I have the original TK-55 from my unit which I could send to you no charge for testing. Even if it is the motherboard it would be worth replacing and they can be had fairly cheaply on eBay. The 1721 is a remarkable platform that can literally have all the bells and whistles that are out there in one unit (WWAN - 4G cards are available now, WPAN for external media controlling, WLAN, Bluetooth, DVD-RW, wide HD screen, expanded keyboard, Express 54/34 expansion slot, stowable mini remote, firewire, dual HDDs. Where else can you get all that in one platform.
Mind you, in general I am not a Dell fan. I am actually a retired HP consumer notebook tech support agent, 2x HP's top agent worldwide. But this 1721 really does impress me. There are very few platforms like it..

Check to make sure the AC adapter is correctly recognized (F2 at powerup). If the adapter shows "unknown", the CPU will default to battery speed all the time.
If that's the case, you have a bad adapter, plug or mainboard.

Hi Mark,
Yes, I really love my 1721! It's always provided e everything I needed and I haven't found another platform that has everything this one has--especially at this price point. I 'd love to squeeze a few more years out of it. As it is I replaced the motherboard a few years back. My current TL-60 still works, it simply has taken to running at 600MHz instead of the usual 2 GHz. Hence my purchase of the TL-64. It's possible the CPU I purchased was just bad. I'm going to try again with another CPU from another vendor ...

Were you able to get the 1721 back up to speed? I just finished diagnosing a similar problem for a client and it was due to him switching to a 65W PS. Once the Battery failed and could not provide additional power, the system reverted to 600MHz as some sort of default (processor was a 1.9GHz). replacing the PS and Battery was all it took. No suggestions regarding the TL-64 issue though...
