Dell Inspiron 17R 5720 doesn't work with charger. Charger is not recognized. Not charger problem.

Jump to solution

My Dell Inspiron 17R 5720 doesn't recognize charger any more. And unfortunately my warranty expired 2 month ago.
It was plugged in and working in the morning, but then in the afternoon I noticed that it was running on the battery only. It wont start without battery (just charger plugged in).

1. So here what I have done to debug. Me and my brother, we have purchased the same Dell laptops at the same time a year and a bit ago. This is why for a debugging purposes it was good.
I took my charger and plugged in to his computer. And it works. Definitely not the charger issue I guess. And when I plug charger in to my computer, green light is still on the charger. And I have the original charger that came with the laptop.

2. Now, laptop works on the battery only, so this means that motherboard is working. I guess.

3. Next thing I did was unplugged charger and removed the battery from the laptop. Then I pushed and hold "Power" button for 45 seconds to discharge a flea charge. Plugged charger back in but laptop wont start.

4. Next I started laptop on the battery, went to BIOS and checked if the charger is recognized in the BIOS. No, it doesn't recognize charger. So, if it is not a charger then what else can it be?

5. Laptop doesn't have any strange smells so I'm not sure if anything happened with the motherboard, but I would assume mother board is ok because it works of the battery.

6. I was thinking updating the BIOS, but I can't, because it wont update while laptop runs on the battery, it requires to be plugged in.

Now I'm stuck. I don't know what else I can do. I'm willing to spend a little bit more money on it to try fixing it.

If anybody had such problem in the past please let me know what have you done and whether it fixed it.
Or if anybody have other ideas, I'll be happy and appreciated the help.

Hi CJ777,

Thanks for reaching out with your query. You pretty much figured out all points of failure. Good job.

If the adapter is not detected in BIOS, it most likely is an issue with the mother board. In the BIOS set up, AC adapter should show up as 65w or 90w. If the adapter status is 'None' or 'Unknown Device Installed', it indicates that the mother board is not detecting the adapter for which the battery is not getting charged. Once the battery charge drains, I'm sure the adapter will not charge it again. Replacing the system board should resolve this issue.

Thanks and Regards

Hi Satya,

Thanks for your quick reply.

How much would it cost to replace system board (motherboard)?
What if after replacing system board it will still not work?
Is there anything I can do to make sure that it is 100% motherboard failure?

Thanks again.

I'm not sure about the cost involved. Please call Out of Warranty Repair on 1-800-288-4410 (US customers only) to check the cost of mother board including the service charges. If you are residing in UK, call Expired Warranty Services on 0844 338 1000

I'm having the exact same problem.  With absolutely no luck from Dell 'tech support'.  Google shows this is a very common issue with Dell laptops.  The solution appears to be to purchase another laptop, not a Dell.

I'm having the SAME problem.  I can not even update the BIOS because it needs the battery to be fully charged-- BUT my computer doesn't recognize the AC adapter, so I can't charge it. Frustrated.  I purchased a new AC adapter thinking THAT would solve my problem, no.  I was warned not to get another DELL, however I purchased this one a little over a year ago.  And of course the warranty ran out 60 days ago, THEN things start going wrong. I ran a battery test, and it said my battery is good-- just not charging. No joke.

Hi thfield/Stetphanie002,

Sorry about the situation. Electronic devices are prone to failures hence we have warrantied the system in order to support it. It's unfortunate that the issue occurred after the warranty expired. You may try changing the DC-in Connector assembly for Inspiron 17R 5720 and check if that helps.

As the system is out of warranty, please contact dell out of warranty team for purchasing the part. Dell out of warranty contact # 1800-288-4410 (U.S Customers).

Part number for DC-in Connector: “9J29V”.

Check these links to purchase it online:

And exactly the same here!

As it happens 4 weeks after the one year warranty period - well timed, Dell! I also uselessly bought a new battery charger before i found this thread.

This was not the first time with mysterious hardware failure but definitly the last hardware our company purchased from Dell.

Hi, and sorry for this late post. Only just had this problem..... If there is nothing wrong with the AC adapter, it's a software problem.

Shut down laptop...Unplug AC adapter....Remove battery.... Plug in AC adapter.... Start laptop..... Go to control panel.... Locate and select device manager... Left click batteries.....Uninstall Microsoft AC Adapter, uninstall Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery... In fact, uninstall all that you can under Batteries, but that should be all there is. It will re-install when booting....... Shut down laptop..... remove AC Adapter.... Replace battery..... Plug in AC adapter.... Start laptop...... All should now be good.

My computer, a Dell Inspiron 17 17737, had this issue on 8/16/2014, seeming coincidentally after a large set of updates from Microsoft.  I rolled back those updates using system restore and my charger began working.  After the restore, I checked the drivers under computer management > system tools > device manager > batteries > Microsoft AC Adapter, Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery by searching for new updates. None were found meaning my system restore apparently did not affect the drivers here.  So I am trying to trace back to which update caused my issue.  I do know restoring to a point before my charger failed worked.

My wife has the same laptop and battery.  I also have a Dell computer for work. None of those adapters worked, either.  I would open up the BIOS, plug in an adapter, and it would be seen for about 3/4 of a second and drop off.  Since the system restore I am fine. So now I'll go through those updates one by one to see which one apparently broke my machine.  I'm glad I wasn't complacent but got cracking right away or I would have run out of battery power before I solved the problem.
