Dell Inspiron N5110 - keyboard does not work at boot options menu (safe mode, safe mode with networking etc)
Hi guys,
I just bought my Dell Inspiron N5110 i5 2450M 2.50 GHz 4 GB Ram machine 2 months ago
I just realized my keyboard does not work at all when the system is booting. If the PC is abruptly shutdown, icant make a selection for safe mode ot any thing else, and the default selection works. Also i cant do anything if i enter my bootable cd, it keeps saying press any key to continue and i keep pressing all keys, but it does not detects any key strokes. Once the OS is loaded, every thing is fine, i m playing all kind of games and stuff
I have latest bios, dont know if it is a BIOS setting or what
please help

It could be that you are tapping the keyboard too often and filling the keyboard cache and temporarily locking the keyboard. Try tapping the F12 or F8 less often, slower, and see if you are able to bring up the menu and the keyboard works.

If you start the system from a Cold boot, are you able to use the keyboard? If so, I would check the BIOS if possible, start the system tapping F2 and choose the Exit tab. Choose Restore to Defaults and then select yes. Then select the Advanced tab and make sure that USB Emulation is enabled. Select the Exit tab again and select save changes and reset.

I could not understand completly what u meant from cold boot, heres what i did
Turned off my laptop, waited 10 secs
Turned it on and entered bios
Selected Exit Tab > Restore Defaults
Selected Asdvanced and made sure USB Emulation is ENABLED
Saved BIOS changes and entered bootable win7 dvd in dvd drive
Pressed F12 to boot from dvd
Message came to press any key to boot from cd
kept pressing all keys that i could hit but NOTHING happnd, no keystrokes detected :( and it finally loaded my win7 :(

I understand now. I thought it was a keyboard problem. The keyboard is working while booting or you wouldn't be able to enter BIOS or even get to the F12 menu.
If you are trying to Boot to a DVD, then the first thing I would check, is to see if the DVD drive works in Windows. Once you verify that the drive is working then you may not have a bootable DVD or CD.

I had the same problem with my Inspiron N5110 and heres how I fixed the keyboard not responding on bootup.
I first noticed that there was a problem when I tried to save a document and when I clicked in a window pane that had a scroll bar it would automatically scroll down to the very bottom selection and get stuck right there. First I thought it was a stuck Page down or down arrow key so I installed a program called "sharpkeys" that would reassign the down button and the page down button to another keyboard key.
When this didn't work I attempted to update all the drivers on the Dell website... which didn't work either.
Finally I unplugged my wireless usb keyboard and mouse transmitter and the problem went away.
If you are not using a wireless keyboard or mouse then perhaps there is an IRQ conflict with some other piece of hardware or with the touch pad software.
That worked for me so I thought I'd share it. Good Luck!

I am having the same problem in my Dell Vostro 3550.
Everything is okay about keyboard and system.
Keyboard works fine in Bios, also in F2 and F12 but
when i enter into windows options by pressing F8, it seems that the keyboard is dead. i cant select anything.
Similarly, when i want to boot from CD/dvd rom, I press F12 for boot options, it works fine. but when displays "Press any key to boot from cd/dvd.." Then my key press doesnt work. It boots up my system Windows.
I think This is a common problem of DEll Laptobs

I have this same problem with my Dell Inspiron N1550 that I purchased only a year ago.
The keyboard is totally dead from the very start, so I am not able to boot or choose any of the options.
It seems to be a keyboard problem.about 3 months back, my video camera went dead and disappeared totally from the system.
What the heck?
