Dell Latitude D530 will not function

I have a Dell Latitude D530 that stopped charging the battery and once the battery was drained stopped working completely.  I have checked the power adapter (I have three spare adapters) and it is working properly.  The green light on the power adapter comes on when it is plugged into the electrical outlet, but the light immediately goes out as soon as I plug the other end into the computer.  I suspect the motherboard has shorted out, but would like another opinion.

Thanks

To test it, remove the battery and use just the adapter. If it still doesn't work, it probably is the  motherboard.  If it works without the battery, replace the battery.

I forgot to mention that I had tried that also and it still did not work.  So it looks like it is the motherboard.  I guess I will remove the useful parts and dispose what's left.

Thanks
