Dell Latitude D630 faulty Nvidia chip
I bought a reasonably priced D630 from Ebay and was told that it was working correctly, however upon receiving it I discovered that there's some green/pink artifacts that appear on the screen, mainly when playing back video.
I called the person I bought it from and he said that I need to transfer the ownership from the previous business into my own name, which I did before. I'm awaiting a confirmation email for that. He said that after it's completed, I'll have an extra 5 months of warranty, which I was curious about. Is this true? The current warranty listed for the laptop's service tag has ended.
Obviously I'd like to get this laptop fixed, so can I still get a replacement motherboard fitted by Dell? If so, do I actually need to be under warranty, or will they do it anyway because the whole kerfuffle over dodgy Nvidia chips? I'd like to get a replacement board with the same chip, as I planned to do some light gaming on it. The Intel chips would be useless with that.

I've already tried multiple drivers and the issue persists. Thank you for clearing up my question about the replacement though. Will I get the 5 months of extended warranty then after the transfer is complete?

Hi GeraltJones,
Welcome to the community
We are sorry for the inconvinence caused. For the video issue we can try updating the video driver which could fix the issue. Please find below the link to update the drive for the video card

Also to keep you informed that we can go ahead and replace the Motherboard free of cost if the system is still under warranty. If it is out of warranty it would be charged. Request you to wait till the ownership transfer is done. You would be recieving an email once it is done
Let us know the progress
Thanks & Regards

Hmm, alright. There's no warranty on the laptop anymore, but I was told it would be extended slightly once the transfer was complete. Have I been lied to?

If there is a 5 motnh warranty which is left out on the laptop it should be carry forwarded once the transfer is done. Please find below the link to access the Dell warranty policy.

That's a question for the seller. Chances are that even if the system had a 3-year warranty (which Dell extended by one year for the video failure), it's older than four years now.

Which number would I need to call over this? In the UK.

You might be able to squeak in a repair under the 1-year extension.

If so, it'll buy you a few months (the replacement board WILL fail again).

Warranty started on 10/7/2008 and ended on 10/7/2011, so it's finished. He told me that I'd still be covered though once it was changed into my name, so I'll have to call and have a word with him.

Try whatever the customer support number is.

Ownership was just transferred, but the warranty is the same, so that sorts that. I'll have to call the guy back tomorrow and ask what he was talking about because he assured me that I'd be covered by the warranty still.
Oh well.

I got in contact with the seller and he agreed to replace the entire laptop at no cost to me, so the issue is resolved now. Is there any way to prevent the same issue from occurring on the Nvidia chip? I heard that updating the BIOS helped, but is that a permanent solution to the overheating issue? Or is there something else I can do?

Is there nothing I can do then? I was thinking of buying a cooling pad to keep the temps down if that would help.

The problem isn't heat - it's thermal cycling. The chips used a faulty design that can't withstand normal heat-cool cycles.
Ask if they'll send a system with an Intel video chip -- usually, when you price system boards, the ones with discrete video fetch more money. For just about anything with an nVidia chip of this family, the reverse is true.

The only permanent solution is to replace the system board with the Intel-only version. All of these nVidia chips are defective - they will all fail in time.

Oh, thanks for clearing that up. I don't really want the Intel chip because of the poor 3d performance. Unless there's one with comparable performance the the Nvidia one.
