Dell Latitude D810 - Every other startup does not work
Every second time I reboot the computer it gets stuck on the Dell screen (before the Windows XP screen) and I have to hit the power button to turn off, then restart again. On the other times when it does work, it is very slow on that same screen before it gets to the Windows XP screen.. I can start up my work laptop in about 1/4 the time it takes on my D810.
I just re-formatted and reinstalled everything, thinking this might help, but it didn't.
Ideas? Thanks in advance!

I have the same exact problem. On every other reboot the status bar stops with about 1/4" left to complete before XP starts. It hangs at this point. I reboot with the power button and the status bar increments more slowly across the entire bar and then XP starts as desired.

Seems to me BIOS is stuck in it's startup phase. First thing is to test memory.
Case there's 2 RAM modules, take 1 out and try again. Repeat for the other.
If its gone RAM memory has gone sour.
Cheers!

Thanks for the suggestion -- in over a year you're the first person to make one! I tried removing each memory module, but still had the issue. Any other ideas?
Thanks,
Cathy

Power Off.
Power On, Press F2 to enter Setup, Exit Setup. See if it Starts.
Power Off. Unplug Battery, press battery status button, insert Battery. Unplug everything except power cord. Power On. When Windows starts, plug everything back in.
These two have worked for me.

Better to Power On, F2 to enter setup, use whatever option to load default values and then Save and Exit.
The system will restart, be slow on the Dell logo for the first boot and thereafter should be ok. Check that all the XP hardware drivers are up to date. I have heard of bad Vista drivers updating the ESCD with invalid data which causes boot failures. XP doing this is new to me, but I suppose it is possible.
PS. A failing hard drive or sometimes a failed optical drive can alos do this. I would run the dignostics on your system, especially the hard drive.
