Dell Latitude E7240 issues
Hello,
So my company purchased a Dell Latitude E7240 laptop with the E-Port docking station (the one with just 1 DVI/VGA connection). The laptop is fine by itself but it has issues when we undock it and then re-dock it. The problem is that the user (just happens to be the President of the company :() has 7 or so USB devices and since the docking station only has 5 ports available, we bought a separate USB hub for her (and the USB hub has its own AC adapter).
So if she has the laptop in the docking station docked and turns on the laptop, everything is fine. However, whenever she undocks it and then docks it again none of the USB devices work. The problem is that it doesn't happen every time she undocks and re-docks but enough that it is extremely annoying. Also when this happens, the laptop won't restart or shut down without any issues...it just hangs at "shutting down Windows" screen. I have to manually hold down the power button to get it to shut off.
We have had a Dell tech come out and swap out the motherboard on the laptop and that seemed to fix the issue but a day or two later the issue cropped up again. I just received a new docking station from Dell and swapped it out but, again, still having the issue.
The laptop is Win. 7 64bit OS load; has all the latest drivers that I know of...so....anyone else with the similar experience and/or any thoughts on how to fix this?
Thanks!

What BIOS version are you running? I know A08 and A10 for both laptops addressed some issues with batteries, specifically A08 is said to address an issue where the AC Adapter wattage is not updated in BIOS setup when dock the dock is attached.
As far as fixes are concerned, I'm not entirely sure. I haven't been able to replicate the issue when I received the laptop from my client, it actually ran very well while docked. I even did some stress testing on it for almost 24 hours, but no luck replicating the black screen issue while docked. Running Dell diag produced an error regarding voltages unknown, which provided me with enough leverage to get a mobo replaced, so Dell is coming out to replace a mobo for me soon. Seeing as you had Dell replace some mobos as well.. I'm not entirely confident that it'll solve my client's issue either. The only other things I did was update the GPU drivers and BIOS to A10. I'll check back when I know more.

I haven't seen any issues with the NIC, but others have mentioned USB issues on the dock. We have seen, however, the message: "Your power adapter...". In our case, this typically means that the power supply isn't seated all the way in the back of the dock. There's another similar message during POST that claims that "The battery currently attached to the system will not supply enough power...". I haven't confirmed this yet, but I strongly believe that this is due to a faulty motherboard that also contains a faulty ePort.

HI - We are running the latest A10. We have 4 laptops all showing the same issues. Dell has replaced the MB 3 times already on one laptop. We even downgraded the bois to 4 as a test and the same thing - the LAN light won't come on and the battery message comes and goes during boot up. One thing to note is that the users that are having these issues usually dock and undock a few times a day, so they are active. I'm not sure if that is frying the connector under the mb, who knows
The 7000 series laptops have issues. We have has dell for years and are a big dell shop but never have we had issues like this. For these clients that have the issues, we have replace the docking stations already and fully updated the machine. IT can work for a few days and then the LAN stops working again on the dock. Only way to fix is to replace mb. Lan port on laptop itself does work.
Thanks - let me know

Well it looks like I am not alone here. I have recently went through a EOL with Dell having Latitude E6320 laptops with the e-port replicators. We have had pretty good luck with them. We now have 35 Latitude E7240 laptops with the new E-Port Plus Port Replicators with USB 3.0.The laptops alone have been pretty good so far. Our users also have two Dell U2312HM monitors connected via DVI. So far we have had,
I have been trying to figure this out for awhile and can't seem to see whats different from what I have tested so far.
I believe it is totally the new docks and not the laptops, I have a few docks from the last leased laptops. I will let you all know what I find out.
One last thing, its sad that we have the Pro Support on these laptops but I hate to call them unless absolutely necessary. They keep you on the phone to long and do the same trouble shooting steps I have already done. Drives me crazy. Sorry I had to vent.

I can't say I'm a big fan of the docks in general, but I don't think your issue is with the new E-Port Plus w/ USB 3.0 itself. We've been using those docks for a while now, along with a mix of machines (e6320, e6220, e6230, and e7240) and all of our issues have been with the e7240's (see my earlier posts). I still believe that both the USB connectivity issue and battery warnings are due to the docking port on the bottom of the laptop being defective.
The flickering monitors was a documented issue and is supposedly fixed with the Synaptics v2.15 firmware update. From what I remember, this was only when using DVI; DisplayPort worked fine (I could have that backwards).

The issue that we have been experiencing with our Latitude E7240's has been with the USB Keyboard & Mouse not detecting when the computer is being docked into the docking station. It would take upwards of 10 to 15 minutes for the drivers to finally get installed.
After some root cause analysis, I was able to determine that a setting change in the System Properties was causing just the E7240 to "Always install the best driver software from Windows Update".
Drilling down deeper into why this setting was getting enabled all of a sudden on just the E7240, I was able to determine that the O2 Micro OZ777xxx/OZ621XX memory card reader Driver was causing this setting to get enabled once it was being installed.
If your company disables Windows Updates and pushes patches to all of the client computers using a third party application, then you might want to change the GPO setting to reflect the following:
gpedit.msc - > Computer Configuration / Administrative Templates / System / Internet Communication Management / Internet Communication settings:
"Turn off Windows Update device driver searching"
Registry settings:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\DriverSearching]
"SearchOrderConfig"=dword:00000000
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\DriverSearching\Plugin]
"WUSearchLibrary"="chkwudrv.dll"
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This was able to resolve our issue with docking the E7240 and having it immediately detect the keyboard and mouse.
I hope this information was helpful.
Thanks,
Edward M

If you go to START-> RUN -> type in sysdm.cpl
Click on Hardware Tab / Then Device Installation Settings, you can select (No, let me choose what to do) and also select "Never install driver software from Windows Update."
This will also change the registry for "DriverSearching" / SearchOrderConfig REG_DWORD to 0x00000000 (0)

Hi,
I have the problem of laptop shutting down when you dock or undock him.
Bios A10
the bios a10 solved the issue with keyboard and mouse.

Did you ever find a solution for this. We have the same issue at our company with the E7440s. I notice the issue only happens when docked with 2 monitors and the monitors are the Dell 20 inch 2007 model.
Dell released a video driver that was suppose to fix that issue but users are still having it.

We just ended up throwing out the dock and replacing it with a Dell D3100 usb 3 dock. It's been awesome, all our eport docks are now going into obsolescence
