Dell M.2 / NVME Specifications And Upgrade Requirements For Latitude, XPS, Precision Mobile and Optiplex

Good day Dell Community,

Because of your questions I'm pleased to present the below information, specifications and requirements for M.2 on various Dell models.

Precision 7710 | 7720:

Maximum internal dives supported: 3

Drive configurations supported ( max ) : (3x M.2) or (2x M.2 and 1x 2.5inch SATA)

PCIE Lanes:

The 2 M.2 slots available are wired as 4X

The 2.5 Inch bay is wired as 2X

Parts needed to install M.2 into the dedicated M.2 slot:

1x HR8P8 thermal cover ( comes with cover and thermal pad )

1x 4270E Screw: ( Holds the cover down on top of the M.2 drive )

Parts needed to install an M.2 into the 2.5 inch bay of 7710 and 7510:

1x 745TM 2.5 inch metal bracket - most units will have this already included                               

1x Y1WJX M.2 bracket ( goes inside of 745TM )

4x 2864D M3X3 screw. Most systems will have these already included. These screws hold in the Y1WJX M.2 drive carrier, or a 2.5 inch drive into 745TM.

1x WPTND M.2 Interposer Board. This installs into Y1WJX M.2 bracket.

5x 4270E M2.0*3L screws

1x HR8P8 M.2 thermal cover

Precision 7510 | 7520:

Drive configurations supported: (1xM.2), (1x2.5 SATA) (2xM.2) (1xM.2 and 1x2.5 SATA)

M.2 slot supports 4X

The 2.5 Inch bay is wired as 2X

Parts needed to install an M.2 into the 2.5 inch bay are the same as the 7710 above.

Precision 5510 | 5520 and XPS 9550 | 9560:

Maximum internal dives supported: 2

Drive configurations supported: (1x M.2) (1x 2.5 SATA) (1xM.2 and 1X 2.5 SATA)

PCIE Lanes:

M.2 slot supports 4X

The 2.5 Inch bay is wired as SATA

Parts needed in order to install a M.2:

1x 88DJK  thermal pad ( no plate required )
1x 4270E   M2X3 screw

Parts needed in order to add a 2.5 inch drive:

1x XDYGX cable

2x 3XYT5 rubber side isolator

1x 3FDY3 metal HDD bracket ( some units may already have this installed even if a 2.5 inch drive wasn't ordered from Dell originally )

M.2 slot supports 4X

2.5 Inch bay is wired as SATA

Parts needed to upgrade from 2.5 inch drive to M.2 drive:

1x X3YR8  M.2 end bracket

1x 1X2MT thermal cover

E5270 supports 2X

E5570 with H processor supports 4X

E5570 with U processor supports 2X

E5470 with H processor supports 2X

E5470 with U processor supports 2X

2.5 Inch bay is wired as SATA

Parts needed to upgrade from 2.5 inch drive to M.2 drive are same as 3510 above.

Latitude 5280 | 5480 | 5580:

Maximum internal dives supported: 2

Drive configurations supported: (1x M.2) (1x 2.5inch SATA) (1x M.2 cache drive and 1x 2.5 inch drive )

PCIE Lanes:

5280 supports 2X

5580 with H processor supports 4X

5580 with U processor supports 2X

5480 with H processor supports 4X

5480 with U processor supports 2X

2.5 Inch bay is wired as SATA

Parts needed to upgrade from 2.5 inch drive to M.2 drive are same as 3520 above.

 

Latitude  E7270 | E7470:

maximum internal dives supported: 1

Drive configurations supported: (1x M.2)

PCIE Lanes:

M.2 slot supports 2X

Parts Needed in order to upgrade to M.2:

1x DJ69P thermal cover

2x 4270E  screw M2X3 ( most systems will have at least one of these already included )

The M.2 slot available supports up to 4X

Parts needed:

1x  4270E screw M2X3

XPS 13 9365

Maximum internal dives supported: 1

Drive configurations supported: (1x M.2)

PCIE Lanes:

The M.2 slot available supports up to 4X

Parts needed:

1x 4HP13 - Thermal plate

2x JPRFM - M1.6x2.5 screws 

Optiplex 5040 | 7040 ( Mini Tower ) :

Maximum internal dives supported: 2

Drive configurations supported: (1xM.2) (2xM.2) (1xM.2 and 1x2.5) (2x2.5) (1x3.5)

PCIE Lanes:

The single on board M.2 slot supports up to 4X

The M.2 drive installed into the 2.5 inch bay: 2x

Parts needed for M.2.

On-motherboard M.2 bay:                                                                                                           
1x R7HGK  thermal pad ( installs onto the motherboard under the M.2 drive )
1x  YYJF8 screw M2X3.5                                                                                                         
 
2.5 inch bay with M.2:

1x 6J3FV SATA cable
1x X9FV3 M.2/2.5 inch bay adapter/caddy

Optiplex 3050 | 5050 | 7050 ( Mini Tower ) : :

Maximum internal drives supported: 2

Drive configurations supported: (1xM.2) (1x2.5) (1x3.5) (2x2.5) (1xM.2 and 1x2.5) (1xM.2 and 1x3.5)

PCIE Lanes:

The single on board M.2 slot supports up to 4X

Installing M.2 into the 2.5/3.5 inch bay is not supported

Parts needed for M.2:

1x DHR6X spacer (goes between the motherboard and M.2 drive)

There's an updated storage driver (IRST F6) to include PCIE support. ( The one you have to install for Windows to see the drive during installation ) :

Obtaining an ISO image:

For some systems you can obtain Dell operating system images through Dell Hosted image

Note: not all systems and service tags will have an image available for download.

Note: Even though Dell Hosted Images have USB3 drivers slip streamed in, they may not include the IRST driver at this time. ( some may know this at the F6 driver ). As a result you may need to install the IRST driver manually during the Windows install process.

Dell is currently working to add the IRST driver to the Dell Hosted Images. No ETA on when this will happen at this time.

I'm still working on the answer to the caching support.

Dell has many models of drives shipped with the 7510, including: Sandisk, Hynix, Samsung SM871 and Samsung SM961

@Absolutpleb,

Inspiron 7378 supports only M.2 SATA drives

@Bbalegar,

5480 with H processor supports 4X ( Your system supports 4X )

@Cs42,

I was wrong here. I heard back from Dell engineering and they advised of the below:

-The 2242 cache drive will be installed into the WWAN slot.

-You'll need 1 screw for the 2242 card: 4270E 2X3

-Dell only supports the card as a cache card. No support for it being bootable.

I'm working to get installation and set-up instructions and will get back when I can.

Hi a

I wanna put a Samsung NVME 960 M.2 in my 5480 and I cannot get the parts for that in Canada. Dell support tells me those parts are for internal use only and cannot be sold.

1x 2FFR0 end bracket

1x X3DN4 -Thermal plate

1x 4270E - End screw

Any way to get them or a workaround?

I am stuck on an issue I am trying to resolve for my company and you seem to be the only guy on the net that has any clue what is going on. But I need a little more granulatiry with my specific issue.

We just got in x13 5580's and I tried to get answers from Dell tech 1 chat support, to no avail. What we are trying to do is spec out 512GB NVMe SSD's as the only drive (C:). It looks like we can but need three specific parts:

1x 2FFR0 end bracket

1x X3DN4 -Thermal plate

1x 4270E - End screw

I cannot locate a vendor for these parts. How can I obtain them?

Justin C, i tried and didnt works

I bought this one: www.amazon.com/.../ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00 (to upgrade my corporate laptop)

I have a personal laptop (Dell Vostro 5470) and it is possible to add a SSD m.2 in the WWAN slot.

I will transform this SSD i've bought into ssd external drive

Hi Justin,

I just purchased a Latitude 5580 laptop with a 128 gbyte m.2 ssd. It appears from your original post that I can add a2.5" SATA HDD to the computer. I have an Intel i5-6300u processor, so I'm guessing it won't transfer data above 2x.

These may seem like some silly questions:

  1. 2x - is that a max rate of 300 Mbytes/second or 3.0 Gbits/sec? So no sense spending extra on a faster drive.
  2. From a practical point of view is a 7200 RPM drive much faster than 5400? For that matter what about 10,000?
  3. Will I need any other parts to install the drive (hardware, cables, etc.)

Looking through the manual I came across this:

"NOTE: 92 WHr battery supports only SSD card and USB Type-C port, and cannot support 2.5–inch drive."

So I can forget about the HDD

Thank you for your questions.

The 5580 can't have one 2280 M.2 and one 2.5 inch drive installed at the same time. It can have one 2242 drive and one 2.5 inch drive at the same time. The 2242 goes in the WWAN slot but can only be used a cache drive.

Your choices are one M.2 2280 as boot or one 2.5 inch drive as boot. A battery downgrade to 4 cell, does allow for a 2.5 inch drive to be installed, if you so choose to switch.

And you are correct. 5580 with U processor i5-6300 supports 2X NVME.

Parts required to switch to 2.5 inch:

1x 6F7DD  HDD bracket

1x 6NVFT HDD cable

4x 4270E screw

Thanks Justin,

According to my service tag my computer arrived with a 4 cell 68WHr battery. Does  that mean I can install a 2.5" HDD using the parts cited above or will I still need to swap out the 2280 SSD for a 2242 SSD?

And now this confuses me: The manual states:

"NOTE: Before installing SSD card, you must make sure that your computer has a 92 Whr battery.". However, it appears mine arrived from the factory with an SSD and a 68 Whr battery.
