Dell M6700 - Blank Screen

Jump to solution

Hi,

I have a Dell M6700

I can turn machine on but laptop screen is blank.

When I plug in VGA I can obtain video - although I do not know if this is on-board graphics or the Quadro M4000

For all I know, it could be:-
1. Graphics card is toast - needs replacing (£500 at least)
2. Screen - The screens on these have a  BIOS which is known to corrupt, meaning it needs to be replaced.
- The screen does not even glow, shimmer or backlight at all .. not a glimmer.
3. BIOS - I think there have been some BIOS updates that cause issues.

I ran the built in ePSA Pre-boot System Assessment (by pressing Fn and Power button)
- Results were I could view in VGA monitor, but nothing interesting came up.

A. What tests could / should I run
B. What could causes be, and how do I step-by-step uncover
I'm happy to work interactive and go back and try things out that people here suggest!
Kind regards,
John

I'd suggest you run Dell LCD BIST test by following steps in link below:

Just ran Dell LCD BIST ... no display ... power lights on, and fans came on very high. Holding 'D' with power button seems to engage this mode. However, screen gives not a flicker!

- Not a sausage!

OK.

So the LCD was the clue. ... I did read that the LCD BIOS can become corrupt, and I started looking at replacement screens.

However, I have had the suspicion that the screen works, as I did take the GFX card out some months ago, and just that once, for a tiny minute the display came on, but not for long!

- I thought it was the card, as I have had more BGA chips on my old Dell M90's and other older Precision Workstations melt more than I can mention.

.. Ive been trying to fix this for nigh on 6 months, and I REALLY require this laptop to operate my business (I use SolidWorks)

To replace the laptop, I saw one 2nd hand on eBay for £1200 and these things were £2000 new.

I got it in a deal many years ago for just £900, and I cant really afford to replace.

It was the  LVDS cable , and both your posts gave me the confidence to remove screen, and it was simple just unplugging the  LVDS cable at the display end (not the gfx card) and carefully replugging it.

If anyone want to try this, just remove LCD and unplug screen cable, then plug in again. It must have worked loose and lost an important connection.

What a relief!!

Thanks for the update and sharing your findings for others to see with the same problem.
