Dell Studio 1747 not recognizing second hard drive
Hi all --
I just received a Dell Studio 1747 that I bought and am having an issue with the second internal drive. I didn't realize it actually had a second drive in it, as it was only advertised as having a 500 GB main drive.
I opened up the back to install my own 320 GB drive in the second bay, but found a 500 GB drive already in there!
It's not being recognized by the computer though. I see it in disc manager but am not able to access it, and in the device manager I get an unknown mass storage device and unknown device error.
Any suggestions on how to make this disc recognized?

The drive mirrored in a RAID1 array (in which case you'll see only one drive under Windows).
If not, sounds like the drive may be bad - F12 at powerup. Boot to the Dell diagnostics and run the hard drive tests (the extended ones, NOT just the quick test).

Thanks for the suggestion!
I had to "initialize" the drive? I can't remember exactly but I had to choose MRD (I think) and then partition it like a normal drive. But, it worked, so now both 500 GB drives are recognized. Nice surprise, though!
