Dell Studio screen flashing red, blue, yellow and won't shut off

My dell Studio laptop won't shut off when plugged in or when the battery is installed, and all it does is flash a red, blue, yellow screen.  I cannot reboot.  I ordered a new 9 cell battery, and when I plugged it in,the same occurred.  Can you help?

The computer was not in Factory safe mode when this occurred.

Re: Dell Studio screen flashing red, blue, yellow and won't shut off

Hi Karen,

Welcome to the Community,

These color screens are usually seen when you try to run the LCD BIST test by holding down the "D" key and turning on your system. But it seems you get these color screens while trying to shut down the system.

Do you shut down system by pressing and holding down the power button or do you use the shut down menu within Windows?

What happens when you select Restart within Windows(Start menu,Restart).

Check if the "D" key is stuck on the keyboard.

For further help please post your full system model and Windows version.

Thank You

Re: Dell Studio screen flashing red, blue, yellow and won't shut off

Thanks for responding.  Unfortunately, it's hard to describe in a post.

The system does not boot at all.  If power supply is plugged in or battery i=

s put in, the laptop comes on without pushing the power button.  The screen s=

tarts flashing white, blue, green and red. =20

No buttons or keys work.  The only way to turn it off is remove the power su=

pply.

I tried adding an external monitor, but the laptop does not recognize it.

So no windows, no functions at all.

It's a Dell Studio 1537 with Windows XP.

The D key does not appear to be stuck, and the laptop is in great condition,=

not dirty or broken in any way.
