Dell XPS 15 (9550) Fan Speed w/ Dell USB-C to VGA/HDMI/USB/Ethernet Adapter
I recently purchased the Dell USB-C to VGA/HDMI/USB/Ethernet Adapter (Dell 470-ABQN) to use as a dock with my XPS 15 9550. Unfortunately while using this adapter the fans run at a very high speed, approximately 80%, and are therefore loud and disturbing during meetings and desk work. I have it connected to only an HDMI monitor and a USB mouse receiver. The fans also run constantly when using the built-in USB and HDMI ports, but at a tolerable level. I will have to return this item without a fix, so could someone at Dell please advise if there is a solution or if this is a known issue that will be reviewed? I have updated both the Thunderbolt firmware and software and applied all Windows Updates. Thanks

Getting the same exact behavior.
Plugging in HDMI cranks up the fan a little bit, it's not too bad though. However when I plug in a USB-C to Ethernet adapter it gets really loud and annoying.
EDIT:
I did some testing and it appears this problem could be related to PCH temperature (measured using hwinfo). It seems to rapidly raise whenever I plug a USB-C device, reaching 60 C (before that it was 50).

I had same problems with the original Dell port replicator using the usb-c. Few days ago I received the Dell Docking Station with Usb-C connection (the 130W model) and I still have same problems with keyboard doing multiple letters and mouse skips and is not smooth when moving around the screen. To be honest the fan noise problem I had before and reported by many users here is disappeared but I don't believe it depends on the docking but probably the solution was the update of the Dell Premier Color I did 2 days ago. I'm not sure the premier color update solved the fan issue but it seems it disappeared after that update. I'll white here a feedback in next days if I have more info about it.
I called Dell support for all the problems of fan noise, mouse and keyboard with the USB-C and of course they said me nobody reported them this problem before. I'm wondering if somebody at Dell support read this Forum.
Has somebody here same problems with Keyboard and mouse attached to the USB-C Dell Docking Station ?
Dell support told me they had no idea of problems with the ubs

I had this same problem with keyboard and mouse and have reported it on forums and they sent a replacement system which did not fix the problem. They said it was a driver.. it wasn't. They said it was my iogear adapter.. but when I bought a DA200 from their site, they said that the Dell Adapter - USB-C to HDMI/VGA/Ethernet/USB 3.0 linked on the DELL XPS 15 9550 site is not compatible.. and in fact if you bring up that item it says compatible with Latitude 7275.. NOT XPS. Note the exchange with tech support below:
So as you can see Dell was made aware and they have differing adapters and still have no answers to the obvious driver problems with USB-C. They could never find me the "appropriate" adapter for the DA200.
I finally capitulated....

Thanks for the answer. That's all crazy because USB-C is a standard like the USB-2 or USB-3 and every peripheral built for that standard must work. Is hard to understand what it means "is no compatible" said by DELL support. Does it man when in the future we will find on the market several USB-C peripherals like external hard-disks, printers and so on we must cheek if they are compatible with Dell XPS ? The only answer in my opinion is "Dell at them moment have no idea how to solve so many issues with usb-c".
I hope it's just a driver problem then it will be solved sooner or later.

My system also has the fan noise problem when plugging the devices (USB-c Ethernet adapter, and TB15 dock) to the thunderbolt 3 USB-C port of the laptop, even without really using these devices. I have Precision 5510 (which is almost the same as XPS 15 9550).
I hope that Dell's representative will soon have answer/solution to this problem

This problem (assuming it's a problem and not a feature) has been there since the laptop was released.
Several BIOS and driver version later and nothing has changed.
Dell doesn't care much. Technical support is a joke and nobody is moderating/supervising these forums.

I want to share how I solved all issues I had with my XPS15 9950 since when I bought it at beginning of January:
- Error about AC adapter: At the beginning, I had often a message saying the power of the AC adapter was not the right one. The message disappeared after the BIOS update.
- SSD error: executing the Dell diagnostic tool during the boot it showed the message saying Ssd was damaged and I had to contact immediately Dell support to replace it. It was a fake message and my ssd was ok. It disappeared after one of the various update of drivers and BIOS I did.
- Fan noise using usb-c port replication: I had same issue with the fan noise described here by so many people. Updating all drivers and bios in last few days it looks to be disappeared. I believe it disappeared after I updated dell premier color but to be honest I’m not sure it was the main reason.
- Error message installing drivers: I was not able to install most drivers because I received an error message during setup but I have found a workaround. Executing files downloaded from the Dell web Site instead to select the "Install" button I selected "Extract" one. After extracting files in a temporary folder, I execute the setup.exe file extracted. It bypassed the Dell setup part added on top of the basic driver setup. I was able to install all new drivers.
- Dell premier color: looking at my task manager I've seen It used more than 2Gb of ram and used CPU as well causing the battery to discharge very fast. I updated dell premier color bypassing the error message during setup as explained above
- Mouse and Keyboard problems with USB-C docking station WD15: With my new USB-C, docking station WD15 I wasn’t able to use keyboard and mouse. The mouse cursor moved too fast and often disappeared from the screen and keyboard repeated randomly keystrokes. After few hours spent with the Dell support I've found myself the solution how described here link https://www.dell.com/support/Article/us/en/19/SLN301075/EN.
I needed to update some drivers as described using a specific version for “Dell Thunderbolt Dock and Dell Dock” plus add a specific patch for mouse problems with the Dell docking
- Power adapter error docking station WD15: I bought online my docking station from the web site but since there isn't a specific list of supported laptop models I bought the 130W version because my XPS 15 has a 130W power adapter. When I attached it first time to my laptop I received again the message saying the power was wring because it was 95W rather than 130W. Dell support said me WD15 with 130W adapter is not made for XPS and I needed to buy the 180W one. Using a 180W power adapter message disappeared
At the end after so many emails and calls to Dell support I solved most problems myself.
This is absolutely crazy.

The same problem with the type c dock on 9550.. pretty sure its a problem with the laptop.. but I'm returning the dock..
The quality of the 9550 *** big time.. I got my motherboard, LCD replaced already.. Now the keyboard is broken, and this type c dock issue.

Same problem here - XPS 15 + brand new TB 15 = fan noise annoyingly loud. All drivers updated, display, ethernet + USB is working fine now, but fan nose is absolutely unacceptable! Any help?

Same problem here, it's definitely PCH temperature. One thing i'm wondering, is the PCH chip the "naked" one right above the left fan? If it is, could some sort of heat dispenser help with the issue? If that's the case, it might be a simple fix to get rid of the excess heat.

It seems the problem is fixed with Dell's latest BIOS, A06. I tested with a USB-C cable connects with Nexus-5x. I did a stress test, the fan got 3255 RPM, and after a few minutes when the testing was finished, it went down to 2509 RPM which was normal speed and the noise is acceptable.
