Dell XPS 15 (9550) w/ Intel 530 / NVIDIA 960M - Intel Causing Screen Flickering

I have a Dell XPS 15 (9550) that I received last week from Dell with a random screen flickering issue.

It is based on evalue order code: <ADMIN NOTE: Order number removed per privacy policy>

It is the 6th Gen Core i7, 16GB RAM, 15.6" FHD 1080p display (not 4k), 512GB SSD, 84WHr Battery, Intel 530 Graphics AND NVIDIA 960M

I saw a post about the XPS 13 with the intel display flickering being fixed with the new driver... I am running driver version 20.19.15.4300 for the Intel 530 and my screen is still constantly flickering  on my brand new XPS 9550.

Another Issue: I also noticed that in the Intel graphics properties config panel -> 3D -> Application Optimal Mode... this also causes issues with the start menu looking distorted and fuzzy, even making some of the white text look gray.  I disabled this to resolve that issue, but the screen still constantly flickers.

One thing I have done recently to mitigate the flickering is go into the NVIDIA driver control panel and set the NVIDIA card as the preferred graphics card, which works for most applications. As soon as the Intel card kicks back in the screen flickers... I have tried various drivers versions for this model off the Dell website without success. I am running Windows 10 Pro...  not sure if a newer driver is available and just not posted. For example the newest Laptop BIOS on the driver website ends in .3 while my pc came with .5 installed. So wasn't sure if the website was behind on graphics driver releases, although the Dell Update app hasn't downloaded any new driver either.

I am about to return this laptop, this is annoying... I know it is the intel driver because if I uninstall the Intel Driver completely and let it install the generic microsoft basic graphics driver, while the performance isn't good, the screen does NOT flicker.

Was just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience and if you were able to resolve it OR if this is completely a driver issue that only Dell / Intel can resolve?

Thanks!

Just FYSA, Intel and Microsoft were working jointly on an updated Intel graphics driver for problems affecting their Surface Book and Surface Pro lines (mostly related to the constant crashing and rebooting of the device). The driver was released today, and should be available by going into your device manager, clicking on "Display adapters" and right-clicking on the Intel graphics card and selecting "Update Driver Software".

Probably won't fix your problems, but it's worth a shot.

[EDIT] Hmm, nevermind -- it pulled 20.19.15.4312 which is the version from late October. Guess the updated driver is exclusive to the Surface devices for now.

I had crazy issues when I purchased my dell xps 9550 4k (made post above about it) then I disabled HyperV (made by a comment above) because I upgraded to Win10 Pro and I also went to control panel > system > device manager > expanded display adapters > right clicked on intel and updated driver. The new driver was found searching online and then rebooted. ALL MY FLICKERING IS GONE!! WOOHOO!!

I've updated to Windows 10 Education, disabled HyperV, updated drivers, BIOS, and I still get this issue. However, now, I've been having the issue even when plugged in, and earlier, it took 4 reboots because it kept flickering and going black.

This is my final exam week at uni, and I just spent 1700 on this laptop to use for school, and I am not happy.

I don't live in Europe, Middle East, or Africa, but this is the only thread I could find where it's about my laptop model and about the same issues I've been having. Are there any updates on progress?

Manually updating the driver through Device Manager seems to work for my XPS 9550 (FHD) + Win10 Pro + Hyper-V. Before doing this I reinstalled hyper-v and verified the flicker started up again. I updated the HD 530 driver through Device Manager and haven't seen an issue since.

Immediately after the driver update I got a bunch of display driver not responding messages, so I rebooted and that issue seems to have gone away. Well, I haven't seen an issue in that last hour.

I've been waiting for Intel to update their Intel HD 530 Graphics driver download page, but the newest non-beta driver they list is the 4300 version from 10/26/2015. Updating through Device Manager installs the 4301 driver from 11/20/2015, a version not even listed on Intel's page.

Here is Intel's out-of-date driver page (as of this posting):

I actually just disabled my Intel HD530, and the flickering issue has improved a lot. Hopefully there will be updates soon, as I was so excited about this laptop only to have so much go wrong

Second this, I did the same and the current driver version for intel 530 is 4331 which is not available anywhere else, and haven't seen the flickering since the update.

This seems to happen on my Inspiron 7353 whenever the CPU temperature goes above 75C.

Just got my new Dell XPs 15 9550 from Dell - Top of the range i7, 1TB SSD, 16GB Ram. *** thing is crashing no end and screen flickering like mad. On the latest Nvidia drivers 10.18.13.5906 but doesn't make a difference.

Why are both display drivers enabled? My understanding is that once a separate video card is installed, the on-board Intel display adapter becomes disabled. Am I wrong in this?

Thanks,

Anybody's issues similar to these?  This has been going on since I got the laptop.  I've always relied on Dell but this is a real dealbreaker.  Worst part is I bought this for school and I need it, I can't send it in.  At this point I'm wondering if I should try to get an RMA and just buy something else.  Anyway here are vids of my screen.

Thanks for this John, I was wondering if this is a hardware fault? How did you produce the Dell system info? I can't seem to get the Dell system info app to work.

Also, yesterday, the support guy disabled UEFI support in the BIOS and it has seemed more stable since. I'll keep an eye on it, but I had 0 crashes last night and none so far today. Display also hasn't flickered yet, but this doesn't mean it's solved yet as It can go a good few hours without doing it sometimes.

Like some of the other people on this thread, I was really excited about getting this laptop, but so far the experience has been disappointing. I even wondered yesterday if I should have made the jump to a Mac?

all the best,

Andrew

Yes, I get those exact issues! I first noticed this behaviour when the laptop booted for the first time and started the Windows configuration. At that point I was really concerned as no Windows driver is involved at that point.

Since then, I get the horizontal lines like you do and also screen blackouts and blocks of distortion. It's not failed since disabling UEFI yesterday, but it's only been several hours of use since so early days.

Will keep you all posted.

Andrew

Yeah, spoke too soon. Screen issues have just returned. including a hardware error in the reliability monitor.

I hate this thing!

Hi Andrew,

The general system data at the top I got from BelArc Advisor. The specific Intel Graphics Data I got by running the Intel HD Graphics Control Panel from the Start Menu. When that comes up, go to "Options and Support" and click on "Information Center. That gives all the info on the Intel Graphics as well as some general system data.

I hope Dell (or Intel) can resolve this quickly. I can understand your disappointment. I will be glad to post anything that might help.
