Dell XPS 9560 Headset Microphone not working

I have a headset plugged into the microphone jack in my XPS 9560.  The Waves MaxxAudio Pro pop-up appears and I select Headset.  But while I get sound on the headset, sound is not being detected from the mic.  Any ideas on what the issue might be?

This is definitely a software issue, if I remove the drivers then the sound and mic works, but the sound quality seems to not so great.

You should be able to select Headset also and the mic should work.

One thing I noticed, if you have a Playback device in the Speaker Icon Playback devices which shows as just Speaker and not Speaker/Headphones, the mic will probably not work.

If you show that, reload the drivers..

Headset is definitely selected.  And I only have Speaker/Headphones listed in the Playback Devices.  Really confused as to why it is not working.

What does your recording devices window show and if the microphone is selected, does it show a volume level when you speak?

Do your built-in microphones work?

I don't select headset unless I am actually using a headset.  A headphone with built in microphone can be used as a headset.  Whether it is a default device or default communications device may be involved.

RE: Dell XPS 9560 Headset Microphone not working

The Recording Devices windows does not show any volume changes for the Microphone.  The built in is OK.  If I remove the Dell Realtek drivers/Wave MaxxAudio Pro and let Windows do its thing, then the headset works OK.  Although the sound quality is not as good.

For the record, the headset had been working OK the last time I used it.  I have a suspicion that an update may have broken it.

RE: Dell XPS 9560 Headset Microphone not working

I have an XPS 9350 and the AKG Y50.

In the Windows Settings -> Sound -> Playback I have Speakers/Headphones, while in Recording I have a generic Microphone.

What worked for me was to open the Dell Audio sound manager (that window with the Waves MaxxAudio Pro settings, accessible from the system tray), go to Advanced -> Jack Information, connect the headphones, then click on the jack icon (which was greyed out before the headphone was connected) and select "Headphones (with microphone)" rather than just "Headphones".

Now I see your interface is a bit different (at least the quick menu), but it's still worth a try trying to find the same setting in your manager.

Anyway, in Sound -> Recording there is still Microphone only, and I had to push volume and boost to the maximum to get a decent volume level.

I can't find the version of my Dell Audio in the sound manager or in my pc, but looking on the support page I could have Realtek ALC3266 High Definition Audio Driver version "6.0.1.7917 ,A06".

if you want to put the image inside the post.

"Headphones (with microphone)" rather than just "Headphones".

Thanks for posting and explaining how it works on the XPS 9350. I notice that the original poster had selected "Headset", which is headphones with a microphone. (It's unfortunate nomenclature, because a lot of people think headset means headphones.)

Realtek ALC3266 High Definition Audio Driver version "6.0.1.7917 ,A06".

That probably accounts for the differences in the interfaces that you noted, as the XPS 9560 doesn't use that version.
