Dell inspiron 17 cant find extra m.2 ssd drive
I just bought a new Dell Inspiron 17 2-in-1. There is allready a SanDisk X400 7mm SSD installed, but there is a slot for a M.2 SSD open.
I bought the M.2 version of the SanDisk X400 (500GB) for compatibility, but after plugin it in, it doesnt pick up?
Should I do some extra setting or installments?

Which model 178 -- i.e., 7739, etc.? Does the system setup (F2 at powerup) see the drive?
The X400 is a SATA M.2 drive -- some of the newer 17s such as the 7779 require a PCIe SSD, not SATA.

Its the 7778 according to the specs. (It reads MOD,PLMRST,SLVR,BBY,7778 on the order) I bought the X400 as that ssd was described in one of the other dell manuals of the inspiron 17?
In the bios it doesnt show, just the x400 7mm version which is already installed.

According to the order if is a MOD,PLMRST,SLVR,BBY,7778.
I bought this SSD because I found other references to this M.2 drive in official dell inspiron documentation.
It doesnt show in the bios menu after startup.

The M.2 model in this unit needs to be a PCIe interface (aka NVMe) -- not SATA.

Thanks, I couldnt find anywhere in the specs it needed a PCIe interface. Where should I find that in the documentation?
If I need to buy a new SSD so be it, but rather not buy another one for nothing.

Hmm, I'm now confused. On my order it states its a MOD,PLMRST,SLVR,BBY,7778, so 7778.
But if I use my Service tag on the Dell site it states its a 7779.
Diving into the configuration on the Dell site is says :
Storage
So, thats sounds to me it needs a SATA drive?
I just dont know right now.

I have the 7778 with 128GB SSD plus 1TB HDD, the SSD is in the M.2 slot and is a Toshiba SG5 THNSNK128GVN8 which appears to be a SATA 6Gbps device.
ejn63, where do you get the information that it is PCIe not SATA?

I just bought a new PCIe SSD now, but still no effect? It still isnt finding the SDD, even at the boot menu??

I found its a 7779, so that should be the PCIe right? I just cant find any option in the BIOS or startup boot menu (F12) to change something that would relate.

Go into your setup page (F2 at powerup). Is this a 7778 or 7779?

I asked the sales rep and they said the 7779 only supports SATA drives on the m.2 port. My 7778 was delivered with a SATA 128GB drive, and I have upgraded it to a 512GB SATA m.2 drive successfully. I'd be interested to hear if anyone's got PCIe drives working in either the 7778 or 7779 though.

Anybody else who can tell me what should go in there or where I can find the right answer?
I now have two M.2 SSD cards on my desk. A SATA and a PCIe/NVMe.
Which one should work???

In my 7778, I have tried SATA and PCIe m.2 SSDs, only the SATA drives worked. Got a 7779 on order so will repeat the test when it arrives.
