Dell inspiron n5010

Good evening to everyone,

First time posting here and if it wasn't for the problem I have I would not even post here. :)

First to you dell - this is my 5-th laptop from dell - boy I loved my previous 4 ones - no problem what so ever, all running different distros of Linux. Thank you for the those!

My 5-th laptop on the other had is n5010 - running on ubuntu 10.10 - no problems so far - all the drivers are found and it works great, except two issues :

1. The cpu fan is like a hair dryer :). It makes more noise then "kills" the heat. The cpu usage is under 2%!! and the fan is so loud like the laptop is using a couple of extremely resource intensive tasks. This is obviously not a Linux kernel issue with n5010 - lot's of people using windows have confirmed.

May be a bios update could help - I thought. Tried to get one but without luck so far. Here is what I did:

$sudo apt-get install libsmbios-bin

$sudo getSystemId

Libsmbios version:      2.2.26

Product Name:           Inspiron N5010

Vendor:                 Dell Inc.

BIOS Version:           A04

System ID:              0x0447

Service Tag:

Express Service Code:  <ADMIN NOTE:Service tag & Express service code removed per privacy policy>

Asset Tag:

Property Ownership Tag:

Went to the : http://linux.dell.com/repo/firmware/bios-hdrs/

But the systemID is not present. So dell of other users of the forum, may be someone could give me an indication of how do I upgrade the Bios on this laptop from Linux?

Best Wishes,

Eugene.

Did not expect for a no answer. You have no idea how much honor you lost dell - last time I buy a product from you.

Hi Eugene

For Linux please post  in Linux Forum for better support.

And as for your question go through the following page.

It has nothing to do with Linux! It is obvious that it is Dell's problem - but Dell will never admit. It happened before with Latitude - a very known story.

Well good thing we still have Lenovo Thinkpad! :)

Cheers,

Eugene.
