Dell laptop inspiron 15 5000 series - no sound from headset port

Jump to solution

Just started to use my new laptop Dell Inspiron 15 5000 laptop. I realized that something is wrong with the headset port. I have tried to use my earphones and then headphones which the laptop not able to recognized a headset device connected to it. The music sound was still coming out from the laptop speaker and did not switch to the earphones / headphones. (Note: I plugged in them properly.)

Hello. Test the audio driver by switching between the Realtek driver and the Windows native audio driver.

1. Open the Device Manager (find it in the Control Panel, or type devmgmt.msc into the search box).
2. Expand the "Sound, video & game controllers" and right click on "Realtek High Definition Audio".
3. Select to "Update Driver Software".
4. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software".
5. Click "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer".
6. Put a check in the box "Show compatible hardware" if not already checked [but SEE NOTE].
7. In the list of devices, click "High Definition Audio" (the native driver).
8. Click "Next".
9. On the Update Driver Warning box, click "Yes" (install the driver).
10. Restart the laptop if prompted. If not prompted, sometimes you have to restart, sometimes not.
[To get back to the Realtek driver, do it again but reverse the names in steps 2 and 7.]

NOTE: if you have a 2-in-1 model and do not see a "High Definition Audio" option after step 6, then uncheck "Show compatible hardware". Then in step 7, if you see 2 "High Definition Audio" devices, select the 2nd one. On some models it is called Intel High definition Audio.

If you only have the symptoms with one of the drivers, then the other is at fault. If you have the same symptoms with both audio drivers, then it is very probably not a driver issue.

If you reply back, it would be helpful if you include the model number of your laptop. If you can't find it, there is a utility here that will tell you which model you have from the Inspiron 5000 series.

Finally, the issue resolved. Need to hard press the headphone jack completely into the port (more strength to insert it than usual, may be is due to new equipment). And the pop up window will show as explain. Thanks for the Dell engineer support, excellent dell customer service center support and everyone here for the informative detail and support. Thanks and wish everyone happy new year 2017.

Did you ever see the popup window asking what device you plugged in?  In another thread I just tested my system by plugging in a Headphone, not a headset and it would not play (speakers continued) until I selected it from the popup window and clicked on OK.

Follow the above steps and it is not working. Check at the playback device and it show Headphones (high Definition Audio Device) Not plugged in. Seem like it not able detect my headset. In fact I did these steps few times and fail.

There are quite a few brand new drivers for that system.  The Bios update is from the end of Aug. and several from Dec. 8th.  Do you have all of those?

Does that system run the Waves MaxxAudio or a Dell Audio Manger?

Follow the above steps and it is not working. Check at the playback device and it show Headphones (high Definition Audio Device) Not plugged in.

That could mean it's a hardware defect. The native driver is not as picky as the Realtek driver and does not need popups to work. So when the native driver does not detect the headphones that makes me more suspicious of the hardware, although it not a definitive test.

Both the Realtek driver and the native driver employ impedance sensing to detect headphones. It is possible that not all headphones can be detected, so try a different set of headphones or earbuds to double check.

If still no good, contact tech support to have the laptop repaired, or, if you prefer, return it as defective if you are still in the return period.

Plan to return it. I did try Headset from brand such as Sony, Pioneer, Samsung earphone and external speaker. In fact, Dell is always my first choice of brand when think of buying a computer. Due to my believing, i spend lot of time troubleshoot it. Now need to plan and find another item for replace this coming year end festival gift. Thanks.
