Dell n5010 Random pixelated or black screen, disappears on reboot

 Hi everyone,

For the last two weeks i have been getting random pixelated display (picture attached)....

I have tried connecting the laptop to an external display while it is pixelated and the output to the external display is fine.

This pixelated problem is fixed on reboot,

i have scanned the complete system using extended test using dell support assist and no errors were found,

can anyone tell me what would be the cause of this error??

RE: Dell n5010 Random pixelated or black screen, disappears on reboot

Hi SALEEL AHSAN.K,

What is the current OS installed on the system? When did the issue start? What applications are you using when this occurs? Does the system overheat? Are there any bluescreens / system crashes? Does this happen with or without the adapter connected?

There is no pic attachment associated with your post.

If the system was working fine earlier, then perform a system restore to restore the machine to an earlier point where it was working fine - http://bit.ly/1JEw2ov

Update the BIOS - http://dell.to/28WKQHB - and reinstall the video drivers from the support site.

If the issue is not resolved, then try installing the video drivers from the vendor site - Intel.com / Amd.com if applicable.

If you are unable to find the right drivers, then send us a screenshot of the device manager with display adapters expanded and I shall provide the links for the drivers.

Check in safe mode - http://bit.ly/1LHcO2c - if the issue occurs.

Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private conversation with the service tag and your contact details(Name and Email) for case records.

Let us know if you have any other queries.

RE: Dell n5010 Random pixelated or black screen, disappears on reboot

I am currently using win 10,

When the issue started i tried switching back to win 7 the same issue was found in win7 too......hence i installed win10 once again

The problem started recently,

There are no specific application which causes this error and most of the times i get this error at boot time, when i power on the device even the dell logo will not be visible it will be pixelated but the output to external output is fine and the laptop returns to normal after a restart.

There are no blue screen errors till now

I have tried updating the drivers and the bios are the latest one

RE: Dell n5010 Random pixelated or black screen, disappears on reboot

Hi SALEEL AHSAN.K,

Thank you for the update.

Based on your description and the picture, I suspect an LCD issue.

Run the LCD bist - Turn off the system and press and hold the "D" key + power button to turn on the system and it should run the LCD built in self test - see this link for more info - http://dell.to/1SkXNrG

Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us.These are onboard diagnostics and they might possible pick some error if the hardware is not functional.

While running the above 2 tests, swivel the LCD back and forth and check if the lines appear / disappear.

If it does, then download the service manual - http://dell.to/2ejLZZu- and reseat the LCD cable and check. If the issue is intermittent, then first replace the LCD cable - this would be the part you need - http://bit.ly/2evHUGE

If the issue still occurs, then replace the LCD.

Let us know if you have any other queries.

RE: Dell n5010 Random pixelated or black screen, disappears on reboot

The issue was temporally fixed with restarts till last week, and the matter got worse, since last week even a restart was not able to fix the issue . Since last week i even started getting pixelation in the external display too

and started to blue screen deaths which were related to video card.

hence i believe its a problem with the amd hd 5470 which is the graphics on my n5010

so what choices do i have other than a mother board reflow of the gpu??

RE: Dell n5010 Random pixelated or black screen, disappears on reboot

Hi SALEEL AHSAN.K,

Thank you for the update.

Well, yes, if the issue is seen on both the external display and the system LCD, then the issue is with the graphics card / motherboard.

My personal suggestion is that you invest your money on a new machine than to repair this system. However, that is your discretion.

You could contact our team to get a quote for a paid service call - http://dell.to/1vnT6CQ
