Dell socket P CPU upgrade
Hi there, I have a Studio 1555 with a Pentium T4300 dual-core 2.1GHz, 1MB cache, 800MHz FSB CPU (socket P 478) - 35W TDP
And want to upgrade to a Intel Core2 Duo Processor T9900 (6M Cache, 3.06 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB) -
to my knowledge, it also uses a P socket and has 35W TDP too.
My question is, am I right assuming that its compatible, and is that the most powerfull CPU I can actually buy??? Any advice on price??? And do I have to get the composite paste separately?
Am I missing something here?

So in the end, I went with a T9800, and it works well for the last couple of days.

While that CPU should work - it's priced well out of proportion to the boost you'll see (figure on it being over $300 for a single CPU).

Just a quick update:
INTEL CORE 2 DUO MOBILE T9500 2.60GHz/6MB/800MHz - for £225 from a UK seller ;)
Thats much more to my liking ;)

The price is pretty high, I've seen it for over $400.
But even this one:
Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T8300
(3M Cache, 2.40 GHz, 800 MHz FSB) - is selling for £250, ($300???)
So in the end I would rather have 1 of the best CPU's I can buy.
If I turn the question around: what CPU will give me a boost in performance for a reasonable price?
(I also plan to get more RAM soon)
And is it worth buying a used one? For the fraction of the price of a new one? I think its not.

One thing that might help is what Operating System are you using and how much ram do you have? If you have Windows Vista 32-bit, or Windows 7 32-bit you aren't going to be able to use more than around 3.4 GB ram when you want to upgrade your ram. If you have a 64-bit operating system you can use a max of 8 GB ram in that laptop, but unless you want to fish out $200 (USD) for that ram, it would probably be better to upgrade to 4 GB ram if you have the stock 2.
You can check if your OS is 32 or 64-bit by right clicking on "my computer" and the 3rd line down under the WinSAT number (Windows Experience Index), it will say 32-bit or 64-bit operating system.

Win 7 Home premium - 64bit, with 4GB (2+2) dual channel DDR2. - checked all that, just forgot to post sry.
2x 4GB modules are around £140 (cca $180) here in UK.
Intel® Core™2 Duo T9900 OEM 3.06Ghz 6Mb 34W - for around £150 from new, ebay.
So for £300 ($370) maxed out (8GB) RAM and maxed out CPU.
I don't mind the "higher" price, but would this combo mean a pretty good increase in performance????

I am just wondering if your T9800 is still running fine and if you are using the default cpu cooling that came with your Studio 1555?

Yeah, it works fine. The fan is a bit noisy, but the CPU, GPU and MoBo gets up to 80+C (under 90 all the time). Used Arctic Silver 5, and have a cooling pad-ish thing with a fan.
Got to say that I replaced those pads on GPU, CPU with metal shims, that I ordered from ebay. Read some guide on how to do it on a forum somewhere and went for it.
