Dell xps 13 9343 early 2015 NVMe M2 Samsung 950Pro drive

Jump to solution

Hi
Is it possible to change my SSD to a Samsung 950PRO NVMe disk?
Will BIOS find that SSD? If no, when will we have a new BIOS that could do that?

Samsung 950 Pro work and boot fine on XPS 9343 just make sure that you install Windows 10 in GPT partition for UEFI not MBR. The problem is XPS 9343 only supported PCI-E x2 not x4 max read speed is around 800Mb/s and write around 700Mb/s on ATTO.

Hi ubbe1,

Thanks for posting.

The part has not been tested and therefore is not supported by Dell.  Even if the part physically fits in your system and the BIOS can find it, if you call in for warranty service, the original drive would have to be put back in the system for Tech support to troubleshoot with you.

Have you contacted Samsung to see if they can advise you if the part is even compatible with your model computer?  Their email and phone number is provided in the link you posted.

Regards,
Robert

We need a new bios for this to work.
As your new XPS 13 can use NVMe SSD you allready have the knowledge how to do.

Is there a new Bios supporting NVMe SSD in pipeline now?

There's no guarantee that a BIOS update alone will allow this drive to work - it is a very power-hungry device that even with BIOS support, likely won't work on a relatively low-power ultrabook mainboard.

This drive is designed for desktop systems and high-end notebook (gaming/workstation class) systems - not for ultrabook use.

That was both good and bad news..
Is that a hardware issue or is it possible to fix with new chipset drivers?

Intel Broadwell CPU support PCI-E v2.0 4x lane but Dell allowed 2x lane only. You can read more from here: en.community.dell.com/.../19620329

Hi Robert,

I have not been able to get my dell xps 13 9350 to boot into windows 10 using the RAID bios setting in the most recent 1.1.17 bios.  I am only able to boot into windows 10 when not using the RAID bios setting.  Of course performance suffers when I do this.  I have already downloaded and installed the most recent Intel Rapid Storage driver.  Thanks for any help you can provide in advance.
