Disable latitude e4300 touchpad
Help! Mouse is jumping all over the screen - I believe because it is easy to accidentally brush the touchpad while typing.
The Control Panel - Mouse on this Latitude no longer has an option to independently enable/disable the touchpad and the pointing stick - but surely there is a way to do this on this e4300.
Am running XP - 32bit.
Thank you!

Hello pstaats,
Update the driver from support.dell.com under driver and downloads, enter your service tag and under input devices the alps driver, once updated you should get the option to turn the touchpad off when a USB mouse is present.

Thank you pstaats for this information. I was having so many issues with trying to type on the E4300 keyboard. I downloaded this driver using my Tag # and it placed the Dell Touchpad in the Windows System Tray. I right clicked to open the Properties and then clicked on Device Select/Button Settings and selected the option to "Disable Touchpad/Pointing Stick when external USB mouse is present". I also changed the Touchpad Settings sensitivity for times I am not using my bluetooth mouse.
THANKS AGAIN!!!!

I recently purchased the E4300 laptop. I have Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit and 4GB RAM. I downloaded the driver as suggested and selected the option to "Disable Touchpad/Pointing Stick when external USB mouse is present" however when I disconnect my usb mouse the touchpad and pointing stick stay inactive.
I have tried uninstalling and then reinstalling the driver but that just doesn't work.
Thank You

Hello,
Have you tried a older version of the driver?
When at the drivers page click on the name of the driver then select the Hard drive version at this point you should be able to get to the older versions of the driver.
EDIT: fixed typo

This is 4 years later, but maybe someone has an older laptop and is looking for a current solution. I am using Windows 7 and I was able to disable the touchpad by going to start/devices and printers/ right-clicking on mouse settings. In [Mouse Settings], select the [Device Settings] tab and then check the Disable the pointing device. Click [Apply] then [Okay]
This will disable the pointing device completely. You will need an external mouse to enable it again. In other words, it will not detect that an external mouse is not present and enable itself. However, just clicking on [disable internal pointing device when external USB point device is attached] does not work.
This is just a work around and perhaps someone knows which driver FIXES the problem

I'd be willing to to this, but when I click on Settings, it just jumps right back to the prior screen.

I just acquired a refurbished E4300 and the keyboard sucks with the touchpad, but i still want the little joystick for the pointer. Is there a way to disable just the touchpad? My Windows 7 doesn't have a mouse settings under devices and printers. The only mouse menu i can find looks pretty generic and doesn't have any disable option i can see. I'll probably ditch windows and install Linux to get more power and performance, but thought i would check just in case...

I haven't done this yet, but I am planning on taping aluminum foil over the touchpad. If the pick up is capacitive, which I think it is, this should foil it. ( pun intended )
