Duplicated Laptop Service Tags

Jump to solution

I ran an audit on our company's laptops recently and discovered 2 of them (Latitude E4310s) had the same service tag. I got in touch with Dell and they said this is likely to have happened when a motherboard was replaced by one of their technicians and the incorrect service tag was entered.

I've tried every method I can find online, no matter how old, of resetting the tags I can find (Dell Command Configure, cctk.exe, asset.com, svctag.exe etc.) to no avail.

As such, does anyone know of a way to change the service tag on a Dell Latitude E4310 without getting involved with Dell out of warranty support?

Hi Rishi,

We had a technician in today to repair another laptop. He offered to change the service tag for us using the various utilities he had on his data stick. However none of the utilities he had (which included all the ones mentioned above) worked.

It would appear that it is not possible to change the service tag of a Latitude E4310 and the only way is to replace the motherboard.

Hi TIMOJACK,

Check this thread - http://bit.ly/1P5wnTG

Try the steps as suggested and this has proven successful for other customers, as they have reported.

Also, write me a private conversation with the service tag and your contact details(Name and Email) for case records.

Keep us updated.

Hi Rishi,

Thanks for your reply. I have tried several of the different utilities on the disk for changing the service tag and none of them have worked. I get an error code for all of them:

sertag.exe

ERROR: working buffer size provision failed. Error Code 86

svctag.exe

The system is not supported by this utility (error 2)

ASSET.com

Error: Cannot change the service tag. Please ensure the tag is in the correct format, and the SETUP password is disabled.

Any advice on how to proceed?

Hi TIMOJACK,

Have you tried downloading the iso image and trying with a cd - and not a DVD?

Are you entering the right service tags in capital letters?

The link I have provided in my previous post has worked for others who had the same issue.

Try using the Asset Utility - http://dell.to/20pqVVg

See this thread for reference - http://bit.ly/290ZwCd

Let us know if this works.

Hi TIMOJACK,

Thank you for the update.

Apologies for delay in response as our site was under maintenance.

Well, I suppose that would be the only logical step left to try. Considering there is no warranty on the system, it would be your discretion on replacing the motherboard.

Let us know if you have any other queries.
