This is my first time venturing into a Dell forum and I am hoping I can get some help. I have a E1705 that I upgraded to graphics card 2 yrs ago to a used geforce go 7900 GTX. It just recently died. Other forums suggest I can upgrade it to a 7950 GTX or FX3500M. Is that true? Also, does Dell still sell these NVIDIA geforce go cards or is my best bet to buy on Ebay? I am wary to buy on Ebay because they are all used and the warranties are only 30days or less. Does anyone have any suggestions?
E1705 w/ T7200 Core 2 Duo @ 2.0Ghz, 2 gigs RAM, 120Gb HD, 1400 ATI Graphics Card, 17" WUXA display.
Those cards are useable only if you perform chassis surgery - they will not fit without cutting into the chassis to make space for the second heatpipe on the heatsink. You can probably buy one from parts-people.com or Dell spare parts with a 90-day warranty. The cards are not available new - they'll be used no matter how you buy them. Whether they're worth what you'll pay for one is open to question - these aren't all that reliable, and you may spend $500-600 and not get more than a few months out of one.
Thanks ejn63. The prices on ebay are pretty steep. The 7900gtx i bought on ebay lasted about 2 years but im just wondering if I should just run it with my x1400 and build me a desktop or buy a new laptop. It just seems more affordable that way
While you can use those cards, the require cutting the chassis or they will not fit. They'll all be used, with a maximum 90-day warranty - expect Dell's price to be in the $500-600 range.
