E6540 - "this device can perform faster...connect it to a super speed usb 3...blah blah"
Whenever I connect a usb 3.0 device to a port in my E6540 I get the infamous notification:"this device can perform faster...connect it to a super speed usb 3...blah blah".
My laptop has 16 GB ram. CPU is i7-4800MQ. Win 7 64.
In order to spare useless suggestions, please note that...
1. My bios is up to date
2. All system drivers are up to date (Dell & Intel latest versions)
3. All usb cables are OK. That notification appears with every device I connect - external HD's & flash drives.
4. All external devices are USB 3.0. Please don't ask me to recheck it.
5. All usb ports on this laptop are blue and Dell swears they are USB 3.0.
6. USB 3.0 controller in bios setup is enabled.
7. Yeah - I've already uninstalled all usb devices in Windows Device Manager & let the OS reinstall them.
8. Sure - I have downloaded UsbTreeView V2.4.3.0 and it insists on "high speed" and refuses to confirm "super speed"' i.e. it agrees with that abominable Windows notification.
9. Transfer speeds confirm that notification as well.
10. All hardware info can be found in Dell's site under service tag #: < >
Any ideas please?

Hi Justin...
Any news on the testing?
This must be the best tested BIOS in history. Lets hope someone bought a USB 3.0 flash drive, actually plugged it in to the port and copied some files to confirmed it has fixed the issue this time. :emotion-2:

Intel has recently released a new version of their USB 3 extensible host driver, version 3.0.4.65.
It refuses to install on Bios A13 but installs successfully on A05. (Win 7 X64).
RBBEN, you seem to have the required knowhow. What does it mean?

I can add, that with intel core i5 and windows 8.1 I had lossless huge USB3-Transfers >200MB/s from Sticks and portable ssds without problems of any kind during the last year - that has to be a special "feature" of the hardware used by dell or some address-conflict or interrupt/bios-issue which isn't easy to track - as it's concerning quite some models..
My smart "Asus Transformer Book Trio TX201LA" is outperforming the "reference bussines model" from Dell in this area big times ;-)
cheers ! 2b2b

nidany,
no idea but every ports is detected as USB2 for me so (only tried with 1 device)... maybe that's why the driver installer refuse to install (check for USB3 support)?
The only thing business grade about these notebooks are the price tag and some features (when Dell doesn't break them...).
The support, poor QA and QC, slow resolution time, weak fan/thermal control and a bunch of other stuff.. yea... pass...
Still waiting for an update from Justin...

Hi Justin,
I want to echo RBBen's problem with USB 3.0 on the 6440. I've been having the problem since A09. But I didn't notice the 3.0 thing, it was my keyboard for my docking station. Talked to Dell Pro Support and swapped out the dock. Turns out it's a BIOS issue as something that go permentently updated in A09/A10 breaks the port. So A10, USB 3.0 broken, and something in A09/A10 tells me that the dock doesn't have enough power for that device. Works just fine plugged into laptop while in dock.

This USB 3.0 not working has also occurred to our E6440 laptops that got updated with A10 BIOS update.
Waiting on response from Justin on this forum to see when the issue will be resolved.

Anybody tried just to open a case with dell and have the motherboard replaced? Unfortunately there seems to be no other possibility to escalate these things - unbelievable in these days - You are left alone in the dark for months, even as a customer with a professional contract..
cheers!

Yes, I really need USB 3.0 working on my E6440 A10 as well. Worked fine on A05.

Opening a case won't do you much at all. I had more information from this thread then the Prosupport folks had about this issue. I pointed them to read this to know why I opened the case.
Swapping hardware wouldn't have solved the issue. It would just have had the same issue with the new system board.

ETA... July (at least for the E6440, possibly the E6540)...
"It seems our engineers are close to a resolution on this one and a BIOS is planned to be released in the July block that will resolve the issue."

Have the same problem with Bios A10 and the driver 'USB 3 extensible host driver, version 3.0.4.65' installed. The not recognized test drives are two different USB 3.0 HDDs from Toshiba and WD. In setup mode (F2) the HDDs will connect in USB 3.0 mode. I hope for a solution before july!

Hi URBE,
Please read carefully through the entire thread.
Count the number of times Dell's Justin promised that a solution is imminent.
Never believe a bunch of con men disguised as respectable, helpful, corporate support people.
They are not inspired by the spirit of your lovely Geneve but rather by their own Chicago.
