Failed to boot Windows due to bad BCD file.
Following an essential Windows Update that did not finish due to power saving, my wifes laptop now halts on boot because there is a problem with the BCD file
Received wisdom is that you insert your Vista CD and run bcdedit.exe or some recovery tool. However, Dell did not provide a Windows disk with the laptop.
Is there any way to resolve this without a Vista CD? Is there any other recovery suite I can download and burn to disk?
Laptop is an Inspiron 1525 running Vista SP2, 1 year out of warranty.
Thanks in advance.

You will need (and can obtain) a Windows disc here:

Thanks, very helpful! But, I am in the UK.
I can get to this page that tells me I can request backup discs:
http://support.euro.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/en/document?journalid=94A33D39996F529EE040AC0A66E96C0D&docid=331556
but then I am told my hardware support has expired, and I have to contact the premium rate pay for expired warranty service.
I think I'll have to pay for the call :(
