Model: Inspiron 5040 Laptop
While the laptop was on the laptop owner's lap, the laptop slipped while picking up object from floor. In the process, owner leaned over screen. The monitor of this laptop now flickers constantly.
If the problem occurred as a result of falling over screen, I would like an opinion on what, if anything, can be done. Could it be the display that needs to be replaced?
For us to come to a conclusion, we would need to perform few steps to identify the root cause. Here are the steps:
Run the LCD BIST. To run the LCD BIST (Built in Self-test):

I have the same serious problem as webgal318, of the screen flickering and breaking up. It happens at random, but especially when starting up and if the screen is moved.
I followed your instructions above and ran the LCD BIST. The coloured screen appeared and did not flicker. In BIOS the screen didn't flicker but the colour faded in and out a little bit.
Please would you advise me what you think is wrong and what I should do next to fix this. Otherwise the computer works fine.
Since, the issue occurs when the screen is moved. Hence, it seems to be a loose connection between the LCD and the motherboard of the system.
I would suggest you to re seat the LCD cable.
You may refer to the link http://bit.ly/12jN7Vb to check the manual on how to re seat the LCD cable. Select the display option from the content table.
Note: Please follow the safety instructions mentioned on the manual.
Keep me posted with the result. I'll be glad to assist you further.
Thanks Garima, that could well be the reason. I'm not experienced in fixing computers myself, how could I find a Dell approved repairer please?
