Is it a bios password, if so you have to remove the jumpers and it will reset the BIOS password to default

Note that you are replying to an 8 year old post in the Desktop forum.  You have a laptop.  In order to get around the BIOS password on a laptop, you have to call Dell Tech Support, prove that you are the owener of the computer, and they will help you reset the password.

I have that problem also.  I didn't use my Inspiron for a year or so and it says I need an authorization code to get in.  They asked me for the previous owners name before they will help me.

I have inherited a Dell Inspiron 1000, but can not work on it because it prompts for a BIOS Password.  Are there documented instructions for cracking the case and removing the said jumpers?  TIA

There are no jumpers - call Dell and prove ownership, and you will be assisted.

If it is a BIOS System Password, and the machine is out of warranty like my Inspiron 1300, Dell will SELL you the master password for about $50. Proof of ownership seems to have nothing to do with it. This is a total rip -off. Dell installed it, didn't tell me about it, and now wants me to pay for access to MY computer. I don't care how old it is. It's like a car dealer locking your keys in the trunk, and the charging you to get them out. I have several Dells on my network, and I don't think I will be replacing them with new Dell computers any time soon.

In a word, I am POed.   :emotion-39:
