Got error 0253 EFI Variable Block Data was Destroyed on Studio 1749

Laptop powers up but Windows will not load;  Ran diagnostics but found nothing;  was able to download latest bios upgrade and copied it to a bootable jump drive but when trying to run 1749A08_W64.exe, I get error 'cannot run in dos'

Hi mwhills,

Since there are no errors found by hardware diagnostics, please run the 32 bit diagnostics on hard drive to check if the hard drive is working as designed. Run the hardware diagnostics referring to the link below and then run the 32 bit diagnostics.

I ran the PSA Diagnostics and did not find any errors.

I ran the 32 bit diagnostics and that test did not find any errors either.

I then took the option to do startup repair, and received this message:

Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automatically.

Problem details:

Problem Signature 01: 6.1.7600.16385

Problem Signature 02: 6.1.7600.16385

Problem Signature 03: unknown

Problem Signature 04: 1180

Problem Signature 05: AutoFailover

Problem Signature 06: 1

Problem Signature 07: FailureDuringSetup

OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.1

Locale ID: 1033

I have also taken the System Restore option to restore windows to an earlier point in time.  The operating system still does not load on startup.

If I take the option for Command Prompt, it does open a DOS window, and I can see all the directories/folders that are on the hard drive.

Is there a way to upgrade the bios using a dos version?   I had downloaded the version from Dell's website and put it on a bootable jump drive but cannot run the exe.

Hi mwhills,

This is not an issue with the hardware; hence I would suggest you to do a clean installation of operating system. Meanwhile we do not recommend to update the BIOS using DOS.

I went ahead an formatted the drive and reinstalled the OS yesterday.  Success!   Just need to get all the drivers and updates applied now.   Thanks for your assistance!

This specific error seems to be BIOS on Lenovo.

download.lenovo.com/.../7uuj38us.txt

Version 3.12-1.06 (BIOS ID: 7UET82WW - H8 ID 7VHT16WW)

------------------------------------------------------

[Problem fixes]

- Fixed an issue where a 0253 error was not displayed even if EFI Variable Block

 Data was destroyed.

UEFI variables provide a way to store data, in particular non-volatile data, that is shared between platform firmware and operating systems or UEFI applications. Variable namespaces are identified by GUIDs, and variables are key/value pairs. For example, variables can be used to keep crash messages in NVRAM after a crash for the operating system to retrieve after a reboot.
