Headphone sound

My Dell XPS17 laptop doesn't detect the headphones when plugged in. Sound still comes from the speakers with headphones connected. I have to reboot 3-4 times to work properly with sound thru headphones when plugged in. What could be the cause?

Your laptop can use either a Realtel audio driver or the native Windows audio driver. Compare the audio drivers. If the problem is solved when using the native driver, then the fault is with the Realtek driver. If you get the same symptoms with both drivers then it could be a hardware failure.

If you still have the original hard drive then you might still have the Dell 32-bit Diagnostics partition. That utility can help you determine if it is a hardware versus software failure, however that can be tricky since the failure is intermittent in your case.
