How to install Windows 8 video/graphics drivers for an Inspiron 6000/6400/E1505/8600/9100/9200/9300/9400/E1705 Latitude D610/D810 or Inspiron XPS notebook system

There is no dedicated Windows 8 Driver for the ATI Mobility X300/X600/X1300/X1400 graphics cards but I have documented that the Windows Vista Driver R153383.exe will install and work reliably in Microsoft Windows8.

The steps for installation are listed below:

  1. Download the R153383.exe drvier from: http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/DriverDetails?driverId=R153383 and extract the compressed files, then cancel the automatic installation of the driver (It crashed out on me when I ran the install)
  2. From The Style UI interface, move the mouse pointer to the lower left corner, and Right Click, select Device Manager from the pop-up menu.
  3. Click the arrow next to Display Adapter, Microsoft Basic Display should be listed.
  4. Right Click the Microsoft Basic Display and click Update Driver, then select Browse My Computer ...., then Click Let Me Pick From a List ....
  5. Click the HAVE DISK Button in the Install from Disk Window, browse to the C:\Dell\Drivers\R153383\Packages\Driver\Display\LH_INF folder and click CL_45540.inf then Click Open and OK to install the driver.

I have completed this process on both an Inspiron E1505/6400 and Inspiron 6000 and both systems are working fine, even power management seems to function well.

Can you get a multiple display with a projector? I was able to get the ATI Mobility x300 as the display adapter, but I can only get one display at a time. With XP, I could see my laptop screen duplicated on a projector and I would like to be able to do the same under Windows 8.

When I check the display with the Control Panel, it allows for only one display and the monitor is a generic PnP monitor and the adapter is the Microsoft Basic Display driver.

I didn't use the method that you suggested to get the X300 adapter.

Any suggestions?

Thank you.

I tried this method and it worked! I can now duplicate my display on a projector.

Thank you very much!

Brilliant! Thank you so much. I've tried so many different bits of advice with different downloads to get this working and was just about to give up when I found your solution. Well done!

Hi Donald,

Would this solution work on 64 bit Windows 8 as well? Whenever I try and update the driver with the file you specified, I get the message "The folder you specified does not contain a compatible software driver for your device. If the folder contains a driver, make sure it is designed to work with Windows for x64-based systems.

I have an e1505 with service tag

Please suggest. Thanks.

In my case the Intel GM945 worked directly with Windows 8 on the Latitude D820, I didn't need to hunt for an additional driver so the Intel graphics on the 6400 should be covered in a like manner. For the ATI/nVidea Cards I would recommend trying the following.

1. Select the correct driver and Add to Basket:

For the ATI X300 - Windows 7 64 bit:

http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/ScopedViewInline.aspx?updateid=72f6e37c-4bbd-4493-9714-68c36a003d16 - Add to Basket

For the ATI X600 - Windows 7 64 bit:

For the ATI X1300 - Windows 7 64 bit:

http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/ScopedViewInline.aspx?updateid=f28785d2-d0ec-4b3e-b27c-02c1b1ff0e23 - Add to Basket

For the NVIDEA Geforce Go 7300 - Windows 7 64 bit:

http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/ScopedViewInline.aspx?updateid=1cfcdd2f-c1f1-4b45-b3d2-0275b82d0a2b - Add to Basket

http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/ScopedViewInline.aspx?updateid=4688215d-5fb8-4a0c-9131-20a95916de00 - Add to Basket

2. View Basket and Download (there is no payment despite adding to the basket)

http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/ViewBasket.aspx - View Basket.

3. Install via Device Manager in a similar manner to mentioned above.

Just curious Donald did you attempt the setting up of Media Direct on Windows 8? Does the Media Direct partition/button work with Windows 8?

Hi

I wanted to comment on this because this finally allowed me to install legacy ATI display drivers on an Inspiron E1505 with ATI Radeon x1400 drivers running Windows 8. Solved my problem totally.

Thanks!

Did you test Media Direct with Windows 8 by any chance?

AMD Catalyst™ Display Driver

Version

10.2

Operating System(s)

Windows Vista - 64-Bit Edition

Products Supported

Note: AMD’s DirectX 9 ATI Radeon graphics accelerators are not officially supported under Windows 7.   If the user chooses to, they can install the ATI Catalyst Windows Vista graphics driver under Windows 7.   Please be aware that none of the new Windows 7 graphics driver (WDDM 1.1) features are supported (as the Windows Vista level graphics driver is limited to WDDM 1.0 level support).

AMD has moved a number of DX9 ATI Radeon™ graphics accelerators products to a legacy driver support structure.  This change impacts Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Linux distributions.  AMD has moved to a legacy software support structure for these graphics accelerator products in an effort to better focus development resources on future products.

The following products have been moved to the legacy software support structure (including Mobile and All-in-Wonder Variants):

ATI Radeon 9500 Series

ATI Radeon 9550 Series

ATI Radeon 9600 Series

ATI Radeon 9700 Series

ATI Radeon 9800 Series

ATI Radeon X300 Series

ATI Radeon X550 Series

ATI Radeon X600 Series

ATI Radeon X700 Series

ATI Radeon X800 Series

ATI Radeon X850 Series

ATI Radeon X1050 Series

ATI Radeon X1300 Series

ATI Radeon X1550 Series

ATI Radeon X1600 Series

ATI Radeon X1650 Series

ATI Radeon X1800 Series

ATI Radeon X1900 Series

ATI Radeon X1950 Series

ATI Radeon Xpress Series

ATI Radeon X1200 Series

ATI Radeon X1250 Series

ATI Radeon X2100 Series

Any customers using a combination of a ATI Radeon™ HD 2000 Series, ATI Radeon™ HD 3000 Series, or ATI Radeon™ HD 4000 Series product with any of the legacy products listed above in a single PC system must use the ATI Catalyst 9.3 or earlier driver.   All future ATI Catalyst™ releases made available past the ATI Catalyst™ 9.3 release will not include support for the legacy products listed above or any of the features associated with those legacy products.

AMD may periodically provide Windows XP and Windows Vista driver updates (for the products listed above) for critical fixes only.  No new features will be provided in future driver updates.  The Linux ATI Catalyst™ driver will only be supported in Linux distributions prior to February 2009 for the legacy products listed above.
